HMS Campbeltown (I42) in the Atlantic *DNF* -> Ship Forum

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

This will be a minor conversion of the Airfix 1/600 Campbeltown, which more closely resembles a US flush-deck before Lend-Lease, into the form in which she served on convoy duty in 1941 before being drafted for the St Nazaire raid.
This is one of several projects I am doing for the CBK SIG display at SMW 2016.

Image

The conversion will be guided by the Anatomy of the Ship book on Campbeltown. I also have the White Ensign RN DD 1 & 2 photoetch sets, made for the Airfix 1/600 WW2 destroyer series.

Apologies for the quality of the shots, I might redo them.

I believe I'll do it up in a WA scheme, similar to Black Swan, a stable mate for the Battle of the Atlantic display. Although they didn't serve together they are within a year of each other and that's close enough.

It'll be interesting to contrast this one with the St Nazaire Raid version.

Started today, hull is together & deck on, awaiting clean-up.

I've made notes on the kit and the photo-etch instructions of what goes where, etc, so it should move fairly smartly.

Real world, details not important, been tough to do anything for past 3 weeks -- but today I got all 3 builds out, sanded the hull joins, and primed them ....

Image

Ready to move along ....

I think it obvious that I won't finish the GB now, but I'll get as far as I can ....

Most the plastic is on, save the 4th funnel which is recovering from surgery to reduce the height, and the props ...

Image

Time to think about painting, photo-etch, and a stand ...

4th stack, prop shafts & rudder, added ... and a temp paint/assembly stand.

Image

Time to check all the deck furniture & photoetch to see what I ought to put on before I do the basic paint job on the hull, deck, and superstructure ...

That looking nice, there is something special about the long slender look of ww1 & ww2 destroyers that has disappeared with the modern ships.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.
