HMS Manchester D95
I decided that I need a bit of practice before tackling the Hood, so here is the Type 42 Batch 3 destroyer HMS Manchester.
It's the Skywave kit, in 1/700, which has been reboxed many times.
It's a waterline only model, which suits me. There is one sprue with the main hull parts, and a second sprue which is a generic Post-WW2 Royal Navy weapon set, of which only a few items are used. The big radar array and the railings are the bits to really enhance the kit, although the replacement doors and ladders look nice.
The mouldings look good, no sign of flash anywhere. And finally, there's the WEM photoetch set. This has enough stuff on it to complete two T42s, one each of the shorter Batch 1/2 ships, and one of the longer Batch 3 versions.

We seemed to be a bit short of more modern RN ships, and this looks to be relatively straightforward to build.PaulBradley wrote:Nice!
I also have the original Pyro Ark Royal, but that's probably pushing it a bit in 6 weeks. I can't turn 'em out at JRatz's speed
Plus aircraft build mojo has been waning for a few weeks, so ships make for an interesting change.

Re: HMS Manchester D85
And the pennant number is D95 not D85. I fixed the thread title.
Anyhow, here's this morning's exciting progress. Thank goodness for quick drying paint.
I've actually managed to fold and glue the main parts of the big Type 1022 radar array.

Re: HMS Manchester D95
I now have most of the main sub-assemblies finished.
And if you drop them into place, then it looks vaguely like a Type 42
.
The rear mast will not behave itself without glue. The next step will be to see where to start adding PE railings

The kit itself is very simple, it's the photoetch which will take the time.PaulBradley wrote:Yikes! This one isn't going to take you long, Andrew!

Re: HMS Manchester D95
I added the helicopter deck, and the seam needed filling and smoothing.
As I wasn't happy with the paint finish at the bow, a little respray was carried out. Much better now.

Re: HMS Manchester D95
A few more bits added.
Some things, like flagstaffs and gun barrels will be left until the absolute last minute. Rebuilding the main mast with PE is the next thing.

It's moving along. Deciding when to start slapping photoetch bits on, and in what order is the tricky bit. A different build tempo from aircraft and vehicles.chrism wrote:You are galloping along well with this.
