Splash goes from Torquay to Plymouth
I have often wanted to build models of ships I have served on or had significant memories of. HMS Plymouth fits into the later category.
During the Falkland's conflict, I served as an Petty Officer Aircrewman on 846 NAS based on HMS Fearless and ashore near San Carlos, on the 8 June 1982 I was involved in transferring fire fighting equipment from HMS Fearless to the Plymouth, to speed the offload of equipment from the rear cabin of our Seaking 4 we landed lightly on the very rear of her flight deck and throw the equipment out.
Originally I thought about using the 1:600 Airfix HMS Leander as the base for a conversion as the Leander's were modified Type 12 frigates, but last week whilst searching eBay I found a seller advertising sets of the old Frog/Novo 1:400 ships that included HMS Hero, HMS Ashanti & HMS Torquay, so I grabbed two sets.
The difference between Torquay and Plymouth is not that much, Torquay was a Whitby Class frigate, these were updated by the addition of a flight deck and hanger to become Rothesay Class frigates, The main changes are different funnels on some, the removal of one A/S Limbo that's covered by the flight deck and the addition of a hanger with Seacat on top.
Here is a photo of the two sets of kits.

Re: Splash goes from Torquay to Plymouth
I have trouble building one at a time... I could never cope with that many builds, without sticking wings to something entirely inappropriate!
Best wishes

Re: Splash goes from Torquay to Plymouth
I have a Torquay in my stash - it's a surprisingly large kit.
Alan, did you know Atlantic Models does a PE set for the Torquay kit, amongst others?

Cheers Paul, I had seen them before, but got put off by their ordering system, you have to email them a request of what you want to order then send them payment details, I thought it was a bit odd and not very secure.PaulBradley wrote:I have a Torquay in my stash - it's a surprisingly large kit.

That's Peter Hall's new company, following the demise of WEM.splash wrote:Cheers Paul, I had seen them before, but got put off by their ordering system, you have to email them a request of what you want to order then send them payment details, I thought it was a bit odd and not very secure.PaulBradley wrote:I have a Torquay in my stash - it's a surprisingly large kit.

He does take Paypal, so that would be pretty secure. No need to send credit card details.

Re: Splash goes from Torquay to Plymouth
Atlantic models is the business Peter Hall (who did all the etch etc for WEM) set up after WEM went under 18 month ago, and whilst there is a WEM company again over in USA it is not the same - if that makes sense. Pete is a one man band and attends a lot of model shows but not as a trader yet, but will bring stuff if prearranged.

I've been dealing with Peter and he's a good chap. I'm waiting for his Battle Class PE set to come out so I can finish my Trafalgar. Buy with confidence!

I have now stuck the fo'cas'al and quarter deck in place and will scratch build the main deck as it's easier than trying to remove detail and fill the mortar well on the supplied deck.
I have ordered some PE for this build, so work has come to a holt until I can see when needs to be removed before replacing it with PE.

Cheers for the feedback about Atlantic Models
A quick email with a list of what I wanted, was instantly replied by details of how to pay, a quick trip to PayPal was followed by a confirmation of order, the following day I received a order despatched email, and today all of my order arrived, that is what I call great service.

Re: Splash goes from Torquay to Plymouth
As you can see the PE from Atlantic Models are quite comprehensive and should make a big difference.

Re: Splash goes from Torquay to Plymouth
With the kits being 1/400 scale, and the PE at 1/500. Will it all fit?
