Daz's Iron Eagle - Part 2 **FINISHED**
Daz's Iron Eagle - Part 2 **FINISHED**
OK, so I've decided to add another film star warbird to my mix, and this time it's going in the markings of "the other side"!
When I was a kid, one of my favourite films wasn't a war film in the strictest sense, but it did involve the never-ending war on drugs. The film was this slice of awesome:
The film featured four flying aces who become embroiled in narcotic warfare after the friend of one of them is killed by a cartel. The film's real stars, of course, were the warbirds: Spitfire XIV, P-38 Lightning, A6M Zero (modified Harvard), and this:
Yep, a P-51A Mustang playing a Messerschmitt 109!
In the opening sequence, the Mustang was involved in a mock dogfight with the Spitfire, resulting in the Spit being "shot down". Later on, the Mustang almost knocks down the P-38 Lightning after someone fills the guns with live ammunition, and later still strafes the cartel's trucks during the climactic raid on the drug factory. All good clean fun when you're 13!
Anyway, I'm going to build it using this:
Never built one before, but it was cheap and cheerful on eBay, so if I balls it up, I won't be too hard hit in the pocket!
If you've noticed in the aviation section, there's also a Part 1 thread. Bet you can't guess what that involves!

Re: Daz's Iron Eagle - Part 2
This is going to be interesting!
I can't help thinking that a P51 in mottled camouflage is just wrong though!

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Re: Daz's Iron Eagle - Part 2
The weird thing is, Mustangs have appeared in films in German markings almost as many times as Buchons playing '109s!

Not to mention the Buchon playing an early Mustang in one of the early scenes of 'Patton'. 'Iron Eagle.'..good grief what a cheesy film, but the planes looked great!

The 'stang does look passably close to a 109 when in flight, it's just when the u/c is down that it spoils it!DazDaMan wrote:The weird thing is, Mustangs have appeared in films in German markings almost as many times as Buchons playing '109s!

Re: Daz's Iron Eagle - Part 2
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the early Allison engine ones were first mistaken quite often for 109s and were shot at and sometimes down by their own people!

I remember that film, and remember being amused by the little hakenkreuz decals (Swastickers? ) on the gunsight.
Was there not also a scene with a guy smoking as he was 'flying' a P-47?

Yep - Edmond O'Brien flying his crippled Thunderbolt and smoking a cigar!
Still, I quite like the film! And I did a model of one of the Messer-stangs, too!

I wonder if iggie is having a fit yet?
Anyway, in other news, my kit arrived today! First impressions are that it looks nice and easy to build, and there's a neat option for the armament fit (cannon or machine-guns). Looking forward to getting started!
