Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
I am masking ribs -- tedious. If/when I finish then it's some pre-shading along the ribs.
I am also starting to close up the fuselage; next step is fitting the seatbelts, then the other side and get to work on masking/painting the rest of it.
Further progress depends on Hurricane Matthew.

Great work still John and I hope you and everyone else in the track of Matthew stays safe
Best wishes

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
Well, I've been time-slicing and he we are.
The wings and such were rib-taped then sprayed with a thinned brown for "pre-shade" along the edges. Didn't come out as planned, but it is what it is now .... May come out looking dirty, etc, but that itself is an effect ... I am not waiting for the fuselage to catch up.
Finished the interior, closed it up. There is a seam on the top read deck and underside -- 50/50 the kit and me ... I have really leaft the instruction sequence behind right now -- I think I'm optimizing my spray paint work ... or making it even more difficult ...
I have to repaint spray the grey and tan for consistency. Masking to prevent damage to the interior, engine, etc will be fun. It would be great if the two problem seams were fixed so I could move along ... Assuming so, then I have some fake structure taping to do, a brown spray ala the wings ...
Then I can move along to CDL & PC-10.
Guess I better get back to the struts so they are ready when needed.

CDL is done.
1st part of PC-10 is done, I think. I'll check tomorrow and if happy(-ish) I'll pull the rib masking and give it another thin coat.
Better get on the struts, assembly is close.
Pix by Tuesday.

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
PC-10 & CDL are done .... well I need to do a few touch-ups ....
I think I got the rib effect on the upper surfaces, but not so well on the undersurfaces. No matter, once I fix a few flaws, I'm going to give them a quick going over with some very fine grit just to smooth the paint, then a gloss coat to prep for decaling. Once that is done, I'll redrill all the rigging holes which I'm sure are paint-clogged, then it's on with the decals followed by a matt cote underneath and a satin or semi gloss over. Then I can get on with assembly and then rigging.
Going to be tight to finish on time ...

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
I did a quick swipe with some 6000 micromesh, and the rib tapes look even better -- and the finish is smooth.
I'm having a problem now in that I'm leery of my rattle-can clears -- odd behavior and low stocks -- but my only alternative (in house) seems to be some old Model master acrylic and I do not like how it sprays or looks. I don't want to wait but I don't want to screw it up either ....
Not pleased right now ....

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
Well, the Model Master Gloss and/or my application thereof has caused some consistency problems -- I only sprayed in the area where decals are to go, not overall. Today I put a coat of Future overall -- something I should have done first but I forgot. Once I piut the decals on and seal with another clear coat, the wings should be good enough, but I'm a bit worried about the fuselage.
Too late now, I'll make the best of it .... I will start decaling tomorrow and make apost shortly as I want to highlight the wing/aileron decals.

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
Finally, decaling & pix ....
I did one side of the fuselage and rudder, plus the lower wing roundels ....
Note that RAFC/RAF practice was to wrap the roundels into the aileron gap -- WNW allows for this, but it is tricky trying to get that narrow strip to lay down, and to get the aileron & wing lined up. The DH-9 seems pretty easy as there are, on the underside, skid and control horn marks to guide. The Pup was not so friendly, IIRC, and the top wing may not be either. I can tell you the decals do not account for the aileron cable housings, the big bumps on the wing, and it will be interesting to see how they lay down.
Tomorrow, if lucky, I'll do the other side of the fuselage/rudder and the top-wing roundels, maybe a few stencils.

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
Other side of fuselage and rudder, and the top of the wings and ailerons are done, but I am not happy with the wings/ailerons because they are on top and thus the flaws are visible.
The pulley humps broke the decals as they did underneath. The gap overlaps are bigger but the decals shatter when bending -- I wish they had done separate decals to fit in the gaps. I shall have to see what I can do about them. I see blue paint matching in my future.

Re: Wingnuts 1/32 AMC DH-9
Perhaps this can be avoided by using small patches of blue decal cut from unused parts of the same sheet? There seem to be more roundels than needed, so maybe you could chop up some of the spares?jRatz wrote:I see blue paint matching in my future.
