Daz's Maltese Falcon - **FINISHED**
Daz's Maltese Falcon - **FINISHED**
My contribution to this GB is the only option I have stashed away:
I built the Mk.I version a long time ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I was stuck for ideas for a colour scheme, as I didn't want to do the oft-repeated 303 Sqn scheme, so I'm going for this:
Fingers crossed I can do it justice!

Re: Daz's Falcon of Malta
Good choice.
I'm not familiar with the kit, being a Hurricane guy , but I assume it comes with Vokes filter or will you use aftermarket or scratch build ?

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Re: Daz's Maltese Falcon
The kit was issued some time back with a Vokes filter (and an American colour scheme option), so thankfully I won't have to scratch-build the beast!
I'll have to hand-paint the codes and, maybe, the serial. Definitely have to figure a way of doing the scoreboard!

Re: Daz's Maltese Falcon
I looked on Hannant's but none of the decals or Montex Masks seemed of use ...

Just some thoughts...DazDaMan wrote:I'll have to hand-paint the codes and, maybe, the serial. Definitely have to figure a way of doing the scoreboard!
"T" and "L" are relatively easy to make out of tape, so you could (if that's your thing) mask and airbrush them on. If airbrushing isn't your thing, you could either hand paint them onto decal paper, or simply cover an area of decal paper and cut strips from that to shape the letters from. The serial and the black parts of the scoreboard could be done on decal paper with any printer. The white crosses on the scoreboard could possibly be obtained as dry transfer "+" signs (assuming those are still around). I have in the past put dry transfer onto decal paper (much easier to work on a flat surface to get the alignment right), and then decalled on the result.

Some good thoughts there, Rob.
I'll have a think about it when the time comes!

The 'T' and 'L' are easy to make paint masks for.
Hop on a computer and using a word processing package such as word select a font that replicates the code letters and then adjust the point size up to the size that best represents a 1/24th code letter print a page of T and L off. Go and buy some Tamiya sheet masking tape.
Stick some of this over the letter and using a sharp craft knife and a steel rule chop out the code letter by following the edge of the printed letter underneath.
These photos outline the process I'm using knackered monogram decals as the art work source.
I spray paint but it will work if you wield a hairy stick with a bit of competence. You could probably do the Roundels as well if you invest in a compass cutter..

I'm using the kit's roundels and flashes, so I'm good there!
