Daz's Commissioned Spitfire build..... **FINISHED**

Post by DazDaMan »

OK, so a few weeks ago, a chap came up to pick up a painting from me, and while we were chatting he started to ask about the little collection of Spitfires that I have, and if I'd ever built anything for anyone else.

Next thing you know, I'm agreeing to build his brother a 1/32 Spitfire!

His brief was simple: build him a Battle of Britain Spitfire.

No problem. So I've got this coming from evilBay....

I've heard varying things about this one, but I've been thinking of building one for a while, so what better opportunity than this?

Should be fun and quite a feather in your cap to be asked.

The kit arrived this morning. I think I'll invest in a replacement instrument panel to spruce it up a bit.

I'll finish off the 1/72 Buchon that I'm doing just now, then get to work on this Spit.

I'm facing something of a dilemma with this one!

The chap asked that I build him a Battle of Britain Spitfire, but I've decided to do it as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft, P7350. Yes, it's a Battle veteran, but it's also worn a number of different paint schemes over the years. So, now I'm trying to decide whether I want it to wear the colours of:

603 Squadron:
XT-D "Blue Peter", flown by S/L George Denholm
XT-L, flown by Gerald "Stapme" Stapleton
XT-W, flown by Ludwik Martel

92 Squadron:
QJ-K, flown by Geoffrey Wellum

41 Squadron:
EB-G, flown by Eric Lock

The last set of codes are the colours she currently wears. At the moment, I'm favouring either George Denholm aircraft, or the Geoffrey Wellum machine. A decal sheet is en route to Castle Cogdon, with all those options on it.

Decisions, decisions....!

As you're building it for someone else, wouldn't it be an idea to ask them how they want it Daz?
All models are equal. Some models are more equal than others.

As I said in the initial post:
His brief was simple: build him a Battle of Britain Spitfire.
He didn't specify any colour scheme, or even a particular squadron, except that it had to be a Battle of Britain-era aircraft.

He was even rather keen on my Battle of Britain movie Spitfire Mk.II!

Given the Revell kit is actually more like a Spitfire Va than a MkIIa. I guess as long as it's brown and green on top and has RAF Roundels your customer will be happy.

But I tend to agree with Ratch. Asking the customer which scheme they fancy might be an idea.

If it makes em feel more part of the process then it's good customer service.

Which aftermarket IP are you going to use?

Cheers

Well, I asked the chap, and he's mentioned Geoffrey Wellum (QJ-K) a few times, so it looks like it'll be Boy's kite!

With any luck, I should get this started tomorrow or Wednesday.

OK, so finally made a start on Geoffrey Wellum's Spitfire:

You get a lot of plastic for your money!

I didn't notice it to start with, but it looks as though Revell intend on getting some extra mileage out of this kit, given that the elevators are the later style, as fitted to the later Mk.V onwards. I'm hoping they intend on some Mk.V variants, or even a Mk.IX at some point!

Painting some bits...

Elevators at the bottom of the map - you have to trim off the horn balance extension to get the correct early style.

It also has metal skinned Airelon's, and a Mk V style oil Cooler fairing which is why it's more of a MkVa OOB than a MkIIa

Also there is no seat armour.

I had heard that about those parts, but I hadn't looked at them properly.

In all fairness, though, P7350 does fly with those fitted now, so it shouldn't be a huge issue.

A commissioned build eh? it's great to see some recognition for your devotion to building one of Britain's greatest Daz. There is a very strong chance that this chap is not a Spitfire expert or otherwise I feel that he would have been much more specific in his requirements. IMHO he will be happy with a decent model Spitfire sporting a BoB camo scheme and markings, a look that he will no doubt be familiar with and I don't think he will be so clued up as to be concerned about nitty gritty specifics like metal skinned ailerons or Mk V oil cooler fairings (I must admit I don't have a clue about such Spitfire details either!). Go for it and build him what he wants and don't fret too much about the details.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Work is the curse of the modelling classes!

It's looking good Dazz, do you think it's a case of Revell using a modified surviving modified a/c as their point of reference?
