Sucker for punishment: KB's apologetic Camel **Finished**

Post by Kevan Bailey »

Well, I'm just trying to atone for the Arado non-completion.

This has been at the bottom of the Greek stash box for the last three years:

Image
So I'll be joining Toby in some Academic fun. Here's the bits:

Image
I first intended just chucking it together, but the cockpit interior is a bit inferior so I've approximated one based on some Googled photos, none of which are the same:

Image
I'll hopefully get this painted this afternoon and I'll get some more pictures up, internet access depending. I have to go to a local bar to get online. How unfortunate. Not.

Really feel for you having to go to a bar for internet access; it must be a terrible hardship and we are grateful for the trials you endure to share your work with us more lucky modellers.....

I have that in the stash for the upcoming Camel GB, so will shamelessly crib any changes you make!
Best wishes

Looks like Academy tried to replicate internal framing & rigging but back where it couldn't be seen ...
You are right to enhance it.

Fuselage is altogether now and d'you know what? You can't see a damn thing inside! Unfortunately I can't put up a shot just now as I'm in a beach taverna having had lunch (tomato salad, little fish, white beans and chips!) where the wifi connection is brilliant and I can touch base, while Mrs Bailey has gone swimming. Didn't someone once tell us never to swim on a full stomach?

Feel free to learn by my mistakes, Iggy. But I still don't know what I'm going to do about the rigging. The whole kit is full of massive holes where you're supposed to rig the whole plot with one bit of string.

A little dab of CA or PVA and touch-up afterwards -- and to think we used to be thrilled to get a length of silvery string in the kits to provide "real wire rigging" ...

Right then, I've got decent WiFi so here's the progress so far. Sorry about the picture quality on some images.

Image
Paint is on, Vallejo armour green is good for WW1 I think, Mr Hobby Israeli yellow for the linen, plus a big splurge of some wood -ish colour, because (big reveal coming up) the whole point of this build was to try out Uschi's wood effect decal:

Image
And it works really well. A bit fiddly on 3d surfaces and prone to tearing when you don't expect it to, but an excellent effect. I washed the decal over with Vallejo washes which has given each panel a subtle variation, then gloss varnished them.

Image

However the whole thing's gone wrong this morning with the upper wing decals. These Academy things are thick to begin with, but the upper roundels go on as three separate layers and when paired with the heavy handed moulded detail, they just don't lie down. Tried everything. Decal fix had no effect, Kleering just made it worse.

Image
Horrible effect, so I'm going to do something I've never done before, and mask them up and spray them on. Wish me luck!

Loving the wood effect; I have some of the uschi grain in my decal supply (Thanks to TobyC who used it earlier this year) and I hope it looks as good when I get around to trying it
Best wishes

That is a nice wood effect, I've never seen these before...um interesting.
Yeah Academy decals are not the best, way too thick and buggers to get down.
If you have not already done so Kevan try sticking little pin pricks into the decal and then coat with a setting solution or Klear and see if that helps, I have done this myself on occasions and worked for me.
Regards
Mark

Right, I'm dialling this one in as finished. I'll post some more shots later, but now I have a Matilda to get on with!

Thanks for your kind comments, fellas. Here's a couple more pictures now I'm back on line. They've dug up the whole town to put in fibre optic cable and nobody's got internet!

The upper wing roundels aren't as bad as I thought they might be, it's just that they don't stand too close scrutiny.

I've had enormous regard for those geezers who can do laminated propellers, so I've had a go at that, too. Three attempts and it's still a bit on the wonk.
