Tom's Beaufighter, FW 190 and others (plus some rocks)
So apart from trying to re-create a Norwegian fjord in my spare bedroom I am going to be contributing a 1/72 Beau and at least one 1/144 FW 190 to our diorama this year.
My Beaufighter was started last year before Telford discussions were even taking place and I had originally planned for a wheels down model - but that needs to be altered now. Long story short my Beau will be dragging her tailwheel as its too late to change it and I'll need to double check which squadron was carrying what loadouts for Black Friday as I didn't drill out the mounting points for the rocket blast plates. Anyways this is where she currently stands:
Almost ready for painting once a few minor seam blemishes are dealt with.
This is the second build on the list:
An Eduard FW 190 A-5 that I picked up in last years kitswap for £2, super simple kit and a quick 15 minutes today leaves me with this already:
Apparently Mark One models have re-issued this kit and its derivatives with a few tooling upgrades so I'll see if I can grab a box (two in one apparently ) and do a couple more little Focke wulfs.
Regards
Tom

Thanks Paul
Just a quick update to say that I now have 8ft of the rear cliffs roughed out - plastering next I am going to have to hire a van for Telford this year as I can't see how to get the scenery to fit in the back of my car as well as all the builds I am supplying for other SIGS

As a model railway scenery guy I'd strongly suggest paper mache over plaster Tom - much lighter and far less likely to crack. It can gradually be built up in layers - cheaper too - just the cost of some old newspapers and some wallpaper paste. Happy to give further help/advice if required mate.TomW wrote:Thanks Paul

Advice gratefully received Al it's been a very long time since I tried papier-mache, I can see the process being quite therapeutic. Time to lay in supplies of old newspapers and wallpaper paste methinks.beany wrote:As a model railway scenery guy I'd strongly suggest paper mache over plaster Tom - much lighter and far less likely to crack. Paper mache wise, you can build a frame from chicken wire, polystyrene packing pieces or even a card frame e.g. cut up box pieces interlocked for strength, and then use larger piece of pasted newspaper to cover that, but I used to have a second bowl to really soak shredded paper (in hot water helps) so that it becomes a pulp to the extent you can wring out the worst of the paste and then almost mould it like clay, building it up in layers - patience and repetition rather than instant results being the key. HTH.
Good luck with whatever you go with mate, look forward to seeing the results.

Alright, so we have at last some backing scenery:
They still need work but at least there is an 8ft section ready for the weekend.
Oh and my Beaufighter has some paint on at last :
Can we ask for Telford to be moved back a month this year do you think?
Regards
Tom

Decals and details going on the Beau, plus a test of a simple polystyrene base:
What do you guys think?
Little FW :
Replacement decals are on their way as the Eduard originals exploded on contact with water
Regards
