Marky's Senior Hornet ***FINISHED***

A Whiffery GB for any type of model. Simple decal changes, mild surgery or major. But all must have a story to back it up, no matter how silly or unbelievable.
The GB runs from 15 Sep through 16 Oct, and your host is FredK.

Still unsure on the colour scheme, was thinking of the blue/white as on the Sea Vixen, but also wondering whether to go down the Falklands EDSG route. In my story the war in the South Atlantic still happens, so would they have painted the Hornet's as the Sea Harriers were painted?.
I'm assuming they would have been delivered in a scheme similar to the US Navy/Marines. As it is a Whif I want the colour scheme to be a little different to the regular Hornet grey colouring. Plus(!), can you paint the radome on a Hornet as many noses, such as on the F-111 said 'Do not paint', due to interference with the radar signals. If I go EDSG route then I would paint the radome black.

It actually went together really easily and quickly, the only tricky bit being the three part intakes!!. Got there in the end!.

Good, fast progress. As to colours, I'd like to see it in all over grey like the Shars went to during and after the Falklands War but it's your model.

That's what I wanted to do, probably set this around 1986 to allow for delivery after ordering. IIRC the scheme was carried by shar's until retirement/conversion to fa.2 so dark grey it is. It will cover up that 'orrible white plastic.

Nice back story are you going for 899 with the flying fist logo or 892 with a red tail with omega ?

Actually I'm torn between the two, my first thought/inclination was 892, I think I put it in my back story. But I've always liked the flying fist logo of 899. I figured if 892 were the last/only Phantom unit in reality they could be the first Hornet unit in this what if?.

You could also argue that as 899 had disbanded with the paying off of HMS Eagle they would be the first squadron in line to be re-equipped with Hornets to replace 892 squadrons aging F4k's

Both set of markings would look brilliant, you could also go all low viz with the markings.

You're just making it harder!!. Good point though. Can I do one on the outside of the fins and one on the inside?.... I do have a coin available though... :ha:

My preference is for the Mailed Fist.
The nose radar cone on a Hornet is moulded GRP. Moulded in the required colour so it doesn't need painting.
But you're building a Whif ~ paint on, Dude
Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

I've put a coat of EDSG/Humbrol 123 on the top and sides (still have to add the missile pylons and arrestor hook- getting ahead of myself!!). It looks nice and menacing, still undecided as to the markings, always gone for the mailed/flying fist of 899 myself, plus I have some in the decal stash somewhere, not sure about the omega markings for 892.
P.S. thanks for the nose cone info Fred. Just to be a little thick, what's GRP?.

GRP = Glass Re-enforced Plastic. also known by the common names of Fibre-glass or Glass-fiber

Thanks, was working along those lines, ;-) sort of!. Does this mean I can have a black nose cone as it would look odd (and mess up the EDSG camo effect) with a light or mid-grey one!.
(I know this is probably easy or obvious to most people but I seem to lag behind in these things!!).

Tell yourself that McDonnell Douglas moulded the nosecones for the UK ones in black GRP.
