Martin's Heinkel Heavy

A Whiffery GB for any type of model. Simple decal changes, mild surgery or major. But all must have a story to back it up, no matter how silly or unbelievable.
The GB runs from 15 Sep through 16 Oct, and your host is FredK.

Martin's Heinkel Heavy

Post by Martin R »

It had all started so well. However, when the installation inadequacies of the coupled DB610 of the He177 became apparent, the RLM had been sensible for once and decreed that the aircraft should be reengined with 4 DB603, redesignating it the He277. Despite high level official distaste due to the use of scarce resources, the range and increased reliability of the new bomber evinced increasing enthusiasm. When KG51, equipped with the He277, made a series of devastating long range raids on Soviet production facilities in the Urals, Hitler loudly proclaimed the need for even larger 4 engined bombers!

Meanwhile, DB had continued development of the DB610 while Heinkel envisaged a stretch of the basic He277 with 4 separate DB610s, with a massively improved installation despite it looking very similar to the original design externally.

The new He377, as this stretched version was known, featured a larger bombbay and fuel volume, and could carry an increased bomb load further than the HE177 and faster, to boot.

I will be building [or attempting to build] the pre-production He377A-1 from late 1943.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

OK, so I'm not great with my smartphone camera function. :-)

I hope to start chopping plastic for the big Heinkel tonight. I'm thinking of modifying it to a twin tail layout. Anyone got any 1/48 A-10 tail fins going spare?

On second thoughts, 1/48 fins may be too big. How about 1/72?

And so to the fuse mods. Trying to work out how much to extend the fuse. 11mm in front of the wing and 29mm behind.

And an impression of the wingspan increases ~ 50mm per side.

I need to extend the inner engine nacelles as well.
