The Golden Age of Sport Aviation***Finished***

Post by jssel »

My selection for this Group Build is the Williams Brothers Corben Super Ace. A cute little homebuilt designed and built by Orlan G Corben of Madison, WI. As a matter of fact here is a replica hanging in the Dane Co Airport in Madison. My daughter is on a mission to photo said airplane this weekend so I will be posting the pictures.

Now this kit was purchased at a show some years ago and most of the parts have been separated from the sprues. But it is not technically started.

Now Williams Brothers kits are akin to limited run style and some can be a real bear to get together. We will see how this one goes. Appears really good so far. Care must be taken to remove the parts off the sprue due to size of part vs sprue gate.

Side note: Mr Corben also built model kits of the balsa nature and no doubt designed some of them also.

So bring on tomorrow.

I do like the design of the real one.
Those instructions, although basic, look comprehensive [or grammar school]

I am an early riser on this side of the blue marble. After studying the instruction sheet started work.

Spent some time cleaning mold lines off the parts. Not so bad for this type of kit. The plastic seems very brittle so care was needed.

I felt that the hardest part of the kit was the control line rigging. So in short order had all the holes drilled out. The lines enter the airframe at angles so I first made a starter hole straight in. Then I shifted the bit to the angle desired and drilled in. I broke one #80 bit in the process. To make sure the holes would match I photocopied the instruction sheet and cut templates to use as guides. The exhaust pipe holes where also drilled out and thinking of brass tubing replacements for the plastic parts.

Here is a closer look.

I also began painting the wooded propeller/airscrew.

The instructions call for a grey interior. I think I will opt for bare linen. Appears no one knows for sure.

Fuselage halves about to be put together.

As I stated before my daughter lives in Madison, WI and made a trip yesterday and photo'd the Corben Super Ace replica hat hangs in the Terminal at Dane County Airport. She really aces.

So I think some paint on the wings come next.

Another update. Have some yellow paint on the fuselage. Testors 1169 square bottle. Williams prompts you to pant now as masking when complete would be difficult.

Some more pictures of the real aircraft.

Great pics gives you something to aim four even though it's a replica - which I think tend to be better made than the orginals. Note the large gap under the tailplane :-P

That's an interesting subject, and colourful to boot!

Love the prop, that is excellent
Best wishes

Very handy having your own gofer reporter.
I'm noticing the linkages for the main u/c to fuselage; not much there.

Next update. Fuselage painting is now complete and the wings and tailplane has a coat of Tamiya Aluminum. I feel that the silver pigment is a little coarse but by the time I get protective coats of gloss it will change the appearance.

Some pics of the real machine.

Update. Decals applied to the fuselage pieces. I opted for the white tail markings like the box art. The sheet comes with black or white.

Also over night I became quite unsatisfied with the Tamiya aluminum out of the bottle. So with a little light sanding I replaced it with Floquil Old Silver, my old standby.

One more update for today.

Digging through my mini tote of micro tubing I found four pieces that matched the diameter of the holes drilled for the exhaust pipes.

Image

Cut to shorter lengths and the openings filed out for scale thickness the pieces were added with a dab of CA glue

Image

While not perfect, they look far better than the nubs of plastic provided. One more little factoid I came across. The original homebuilt did indeed have black lettering on the vertical stabilizer, Factory built versions were in white lettering.
