Gengriz' legendary Wyvern - FINISHED
Wyvern: a legendary creature with a dragon's head and wings, a reptilian body, two legs, and a tail. A sea-dwelling variant dubbed the sea-wyvern has a fish tail in place of a barbed dragon's tail.
I've started, not huge progress, but that first cut of plastic is always the most difficult!
Up to now, the Wyvern has been a fairly big gap in my FAA aircraft collection, but the 60th anniversary of the Suez landings now seems the perfect time to put this right!
Once upon a time, I did have an old FROG kit in the stash, but the Trumpeter kit completely knocks this into the shade and a comparison of the above sprue shot with my previous build - a Ukrainian Sea Venom FROG re-pop - shows just how fa rmoulding technology has come in the last 40 years. This is a superb modern kit, strangely devoid of the shape and detail faux-pas that seem to have become worryingly regular in modern Chinese kits. This particular mould is in some way connected to a company called Monochrome that I'm not familiar with; their name is stamped on each sprue and they have also issued the kit under their own name.
This will be an "out the box" build for me as far as is feasible.
Tonight's progress; the prop assembly, engine and cockpit are largely assembled. No real problems so far although the engine casing needs a little Tippex filler to smooth the joint - the cockpit is superb with no less than 26 separate parts. I've left the clear instrument panel off for now (there is plenty of space to get it in afterward). I will attempt to paint it black, then sand off the raised clear parts; not convinced it will work though.
A little paint tomorrow night methinks.

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
Nice start!
If you can just keep a couple odds build steps ahead of me so I know what to look out for while I cobble munge together it would be much appreciated
By the way, is there a paint guide (other than the colour single sheet) that explains the colour call-outs on the instructions? I can't find one if there was/is one in my kit Belay that; I've been good and looked them up myself instead of being lazy!

Hi Iggie,
I can't find anything either. However the following http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorchart ... _gunze.htm will allow you to convert Gunze Sangyo numbers into Humbrol. Note the comment about numbers in black boxes/white boxes.

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
A little more progress tonight, mainly applying a little paint to cue up some detailing tomorrow:
The cockpit and props first. Iggie's cockpit has set a high standard to meet, so no corner cutting here!
And whilst the red and black paint are out, .... The split wheels are a nice touch that should help to get a tidy finish between hub and tyre.
Centre wing assembled and flaps attached. There was a slightly awkward set of ejector dimples in the space beneath the flap, but a sharp knife sorted them out quickly.
More tomorrow!

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
Tonight's update. Cockpit finished and ejector seat added.
I've painted on the seatbelts rather than using tape or paper. Depending on the seat shape I find it works just as well at this scale. Ejector handles were made up of fuse wire, I can't find any contemporary pictures of a fitted seat, but I think red is correct for that date. However it is also possible that it should only be one large red handle.
Engine cowling and rear wheel painted and attached, fuselage halves glued together, centre wing section added.
I found aligning the engine cowling quite difficult and eventually removed one of the pins to help. Once I had all of th ecockpit tabs lined up correctly, the fuselage fitted together reasonably well, although the clamps were needed to hold it together whilst the liquid glue evaporated. The wing section literally clicked into place although there is a tiny gap on either side that i need to fill and smooth out somehow. It sufficiently small that Liquid glue is looking like it may be the answer.

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
Good going Fred; I had slight gaps at the wing roots but sanded a little off the curved wing stubs fore and aft and it closed the gaps up nicely
Best wishes

Great see another contra-prop in the GB. Quite like the look of this kit.

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
Limited progress since last week, not least because Telford got in the way!
However, I have moved a few fiddly sub-assemblies (rockets, RATO packs, tail wheel doors) on tonight and attached the wings:
Like Iggie, I had a few problems with the locating wing tabs too - difficult to cut off the sprue and clean up in the first place, then difficult to locate. At first they seemed to join the wing parts very badly, but a little jiggling and it all clicked into place. Its not a very strong joint, so I felt the need to run liquid poly across the wing join as well. Some sanding back will be needed tomorrow.
Its beginning to look like a plane though!

Looking good Fred!
Those RATO packs were a fiddle too, but I have to say once built they look pretty good and a dry fit suggests that they will fit nicely

The Wyvern is ugly enough to be cool, or whatever the phrase is!!.
Gengriz- the last pic looks like you are building the first ever VTOL Wyvern!! .

A VTOL Wyvern; now you mention it there are some shape similarities with this:
anyway, on with the show. Some details added and a coat of paint top and bottom:

Definitely looking like an aeroplane now!

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
A fair amount of progress this weekend; Canopy on, yellow stripes painted (2xcoats), a second coat of EDSG and Sky applied and the wheels attached. I'm quite impressed with the split wheels, which have definitely made painting a doddle and went together very neatly in the end. I'v also tidied up some of the ancilliary items, such as th ebombs and rockets, and the exhaust nozzles. Disappointingly, these don't actually have holes in them, and they don't look as though drilling them out is feasible (for me at least. I may yet investigate and alternative.
I've not yet decided whether I will paint the black stripes or use some decals - the latter looks like a good option, but we will see.

Re: Gengriz' legendary Wyvern
It never even occurred to me to use decals for the black stripes
Or the yellow for that matter.......
Strangely I'm pretty much at the same stage as you Fred, although I'm not sure mine is looking as sharp as your's is....
