Sign-up and Chat

Celebrating the man who flew 487 different aircraft, more than any other pilot, and who could be the greatest pilot of all time. We cannot duplicate his feat but each modeler will build a unique aircraft replicating one flown by Captain Brown.
The GB runs 19 November to 18 December and your host is FredK.

This is a GB to honor Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown who passed February 21st 2016. Very briefly, Captain Brown flew 487 different aircraft, more than any other pilot, and may well be the greatest pilot ever - certainly his record may stand that long.

This GB started from a thread here and that contains much pertinent information.

Each GB member must build a different aircraft (any kit, any scale) flown by 'Winkle' Brown with every effort made to replicate the scheme and markings of that particular aircraft.

The GB runs from November 19th to December 18th; your GBL is FredK who will fill in any other info.

I'm here. Back from Telford and still in one piece.

Which is more than can be said for my bank account ;-)

Fred, as Brickie and I had both selected the Martlet as our builds I'm going to change mine for a more modern type that he flew in and go for a Hughes 500, as I can't find envy reference to the a/c he flew in, I will just do mine as a US Army version as flown in Vietnam if that's OK?

It has occurred to me that I may be a bit late starting this - I'm just getting into major rehearsals for King Lear which opens two weeks tonight and runs for ten days...

It's a HobbyBoss Easy Build kit, though, so should be reasonably quick to do once I find some free time...

I see all of Eric's medals and logbook are being auctioned at Bolums on the 23 November, so has anyone got between £150,000 to £200,000 spare ?

That's what I like to see, getting in the mood for a Naval Aviator themed GB by getting the taste of salt water and vomit in your nostrils whilst rolling around in a tin bucket. :-D

Please Sir, can I change my build?

We will be moving house in the not too distant future, so adding another large build to the display cabinets is not the brightest idea methinks

Instead of the Shack, can I do a Blackburn Firebrand instead please? It's the Valom 1/72 kit

(If anyone has any ideas as to what scheme/serials the one(s) flown by Eric Brown was I would be grateful to hear! :-D )
Best wishes

Jim
