Re: Sub Lieutenant Brown, Martlet pilot
The kit that is to be converted.....appropriately enough!
Initial shaving off of uniform detail.
Trouser legs built up with Milliput. Also a larger top to the cap. Front of Mae West is Milliput with masking tape for the back(in place, but not cut to shape and secured here. The small, half shaped blob of Milliput will become flying gauntlets.

PT works his magic again!
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Off to a great start as usual.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Some paint on the uniform and some pockets, flaps and tubes added to the Mae West with masking tape and plastic rod.
Hmmm, not got the sand, yellow and white mix for the Mae West quite right, will try again.

I just shake my head in disbelief at the things you decide are possible then prove that they are. As usual outstanding work

Cheers chaps, this is all a well trodden path so far, scratching a Mae West and a helmet, oxygen mask, goggles and leads will be....interesting!

Re: Sub Lieutenant Brown, Martlet pilot
Better colour on the Mae West. Ties on the front are strips of painted masking tape and some more on the back. From all the photos of Mae Wests (wartime and militaria sites ) there seems to be a lot of variations in colour and little details. There is a photo of 3 FAA pilots in front of a Seafire and no two Mae Wests are identical! so I'm just going for the middle ground in shade and detailing.
The cap badge is painted on a shaped 'pancake' of Milliput to give it 3D depth. The right hand will be modified to be holding the flying helmet and oxygen mask.

Re: Sub Lieutenant Brown, Martlet pilot
Slight change of plan. I wasn't happy with how the cap was sitting on top of the head. Udet wore his cap angled down to the left brow and Winkle wore it angled down to the right brow and the kits head was shaped to accept the cap one way only. I didn't fancy the risk attached to the necessary adjustments so close to the face, so I'll be doing him wearing a flying helmet and goggles with his cap tucked under his arm. ......and I had a cunning plan for doing the flying helmet in his hand too!

Hmmmm! Exorcist conversion?.....jRatz wrote:You can't just turn the head around ?
Meanwhile, doing all the hoses and wires on a scratched 1/16 flying helmet and getting them to sit convincingly are proving just as enjoyable as rigging a bipe

Not exactly as planned, I had planned on him having his cap under his left arm, but it kind of got lost, visually, against the uniform.
