How do you do that with the metal clips -- I always mar the plastic  Maybe I just do that with soft plastic kits ....

I think the trick is to use them partially open so the closure force is lessened.

I've progressed and the main airframe construction is complete seams are sorted and I gave it a coat of thinned MR Surfacer.

Image

The construction went very well just a bit of Surfacer needed here and there. I also scribed in a couple of missing panel lines on the underside. I now need to buff up the undercoat and then I can start the painting process.

Cheers
GF

Thanks...

So on with the main colour. I'm building a Operatio AI 'zero' so the colour scheme is overall Ameiro.

This colour (along with pretty much every other colour ever applied to an Aircraft) e genders much discussion. Have a Google around. I went for a brown toned grey and achieved this by mixing Gunze IJN grey with RAFHemp in a ratio of 5:1 grey/hemp I used aqueous colours but thinned with MR colour lacquer thinners. Both Gunze and Tamiya acrylics thin well with this better IMHO than isopropyl.

The colour looks good to me. The lacquer thinners impart a nice sheen to the paint I'll let this fully harden then move into the next stage.

Cheers

Righto...

I have been progressing but with 2 long weekends back to back hot weather the close proximity of the beach and a new car has meant I've been a bit remiss in updating this log..

So I elected to paint on the markings as the Scheme is pretty simple I'll use decals for the serial numbers and decals.

Here it is masked up..

Image

and with an application of Gunze Red Madder..

Image

I masked the fuselage and tail bands and left a cut out for the Airframe Data plate..

Image

here is is painted all with Gunze...

Image

I masked up the rear deck and windscreen anti glare panels..

Thats it thus far....

Decals next and I've ordered some canopy masks..

Cheers

Looks great! I'm not brave enough to attempt hand-painting stuff.

Ditto from me ,I find decals trouble enough, without masking and painting them.

What are you using as a hole-cutter on the tape for the sun disc ?

Compass cutter.

The tape is the Tamiya masking sheet stuff. Compass cutter plus that makes easy work for hinomaru..

I am not much of a spray user but I do use Micro Set, their setting solution for decals does soften them and make them look more painted on than if they are not used with this. You have to put the stuff on before the decals as well as after. I'm sure you know all this but it is what I often use and am doing so on my Zero.
