QCA Supermarine Stranraer by gnomemeansgnome **DNF**

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

After having this in my stash for a couple of years, it is time to get on it as ex-RCAF machine, renamed 'Skeena Queen' (CF-BYL), the ill fated Stranraer that flew very briefly with Queen Charlotte Airways before being lost while on a mercy flight in the summer of 1946. A/c markings by Whiskey Jack Decals.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

I sure hope so, Fred, ha ha! Otherwise it won't live up to its nickname, the Whistling Outhouse.

Looking forward to seeing you build this, I have one in the stash intended for building this year and I'll shamelessly be biting any points to beware as you go along!
We used to have a whistling outhouse but that was only as the lock didn't work
Best wishes

I have been trying to get hold of those Whiskey Jack decals for years! Very jealous. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Cheers, fellas. We will see how it goes. I have two Stranraers and Mark has kindly pointed out where I should beware, ie wing joins and whatnot. As for the decals, I was very lucky to have found them at a local hobby shop. Not sure if they are still available. I also have a nice set of RCN Sea Fury markings that Migrant (I believe) draughted up some time ago and want to get on that some day as well.

I have just acquired one of these at my local IPMS meeting (Sydney). It would be good if you could provide some details of your approach when you come to do the rigging as I shall be taking copious notes about the best way to tackle this beastie!

Cheers

Ha ha ha! We shall see because my usual method of repurposing electric guitar strings may not work, therefore I shall have to search for some of that EZ line people keep talking about. I have seen various approaches to this problem and have to divine which will work best here.

Finally started cutting plastic. Not sure that I am going to embellish the interior to any degree as most of it will be hidden under the thick clear canopy parts and a closed door.......

Sawing away that the Stranraer.Got the transparencies in and the exterior areas where they are located primed in black before being waxed and covered with blu tak for painting. Cut out and filled gap in lower port wing for the landing lights as well, and the wings are taking shape. Once I get the wings assembled I will dry fit them into shape for when they are glued to the hull......

Yeah I had to really overcome some inertia and just get on with cutting plastic and painting things. Along with the Tempest I hope that plans to rattlecan them in a gloss black primer aren't scuppered by this hopefully last bout of winter stupidity here in Vancouver.
