Martin R's Schwalbe

Post by Martin R »

Hi folks,

Placeholder for my build of a Me262. Not sure of a colour scheme yet, but may be in flight.

Mostly oob but I will be making use of a non-kit canopy as the kit one has always looked a bit squashed to me.

Regards

So, here are the raw materials. A nice simple kit that I'm going to build wheels up and display on sone sort of stand.

I started last night, gluing in the u/c doors to the wing center section, starting assembly of the engine nacelles and drilling out the cannon recesses to take brass tube later on. Photos tonight.

A few photos of progress.

Here are the cannon troughs drilled out (you can also see some styrene sheet action going on in the cockpit)

Her are the nacelle interiors:

And all joined together plus main gear bay with doors in position:

More soon.

Nice one Martin, I do like a '262 and I always felt that the Matchbox kit was superior to the Airfix offering.

Thanks for dropping by, Shaun.

Since my last update, a lot of filling and a fair bit of sanding has occurred. Thus encouraged - or perhaps bored - I was encouraged to try a scoosh of primer, with results as shown.

Got a fair bit of tidying up to do, but it's getting there.

Thanks for looking.

The guns troughs look so much better. The kit's efforts kind of made it look like a shark without its teeth.

Looking good Martin and I agree, your work on the gun troughs has made a lot of difference - it's often the case with these old kits, IMHO, sometimes a little work goes a long way to improving the final model.

James, Stuart & Shaun,

Many thanks for the encouragement!

Re the gun troughs, I think in the real thing the cannon barrels are fully internal, so mine is not accurate there. However, the kit's squared off rear edges to the gun troughs are completely wrong and I couldn't live with them. Having drilled them out, the rear portion of the troughs had gone through the plastic and you could see into the fuse. I positioned the ends of the brass rod cannon barrels a bit far forward to stop the see through effect. I can live with the compromise.

So, got some paint on:

Image

Masking round the tight radii and dual curvature was fun. Despite a preliminary sealing coat of Klear, I'm anticipating a lot of bleed under.

And this is the one I plan to do:

Interesting but complex scheme - especially sans airbrush. This'll keep me busy...
