iggie's transport of delight (USS Montrose) ***FINISHED***

Post by iggie »

My entrant for the GB will be the aging Revell 1/375 attack transport USS Montrose; it will be built out of the box with the addition of some PE guardrails (although they are 1/400 as no one seems to do any in 1/375)

Is this the kit they first issued when dinosaurs still roamed the planet?

I recall building something like it back in the mid sixties.

I look forward to seeing this build.

Yes, Splash, and I built it back then also :) and have one in my stash now.
I think it came out ICW the movie "Away All Boats".

This is another that could use an new-tool in 1/350

Yep, according to Scalemates, the original tool dates from 1956
My kit is a 2004 boxing, but the parts look sharp with no obvious flash although I've not taken it out of the bag yet 8-)

More I think about it, some 1/350 (biggish) or perhaps 1/400 (smallish) aftermarket might spice it up.

And 1956 was the release date for "Away All Boats"; who can forget Jeff Chandler as Capt Jeffery Hawks gesturing and screaming "Get away from my ship! GET YOUR FILTHY PLANE AWAY FROM MY SHIP!"

That's a great choice !

Away all boats, was that the excellent film where they built a sailing dingy to improve morale by giving the crew something to hate more than the skipper?

Didn't they also bring out a hospital ship about the same time?

And we're off; progress at last after shifting the Albatros off the bench!
Most of the parts; a lot of flash in places, and some of the biggest sprue gates in history!

And assembly so far.

I'm now in the process of removing all the moulded on guard-railing (actually just solid plastic walls) ready to be replaced with PE. Fun? NOT!

some further progress has been made; I have removed all the moulded handrailing and replaced (most so far) it with PE railings in 1/400 as no one makes any in 1/375. Once this is complete, all parts will get a spray of canned primer which I'm hoping will satisfactorily double as deck grey
There are one or two bits that need straightening out but otherwise it seems to look ok, and in proportion
