This is coming together very nicely Craig. Yes, what were those weights originally? They look a little bit like the ends of PA or instrument cables, some of my guitar leads have ends that look a little bit like that. Or maybe something like pipe fittings?

i would describe them as barrel nuts they are off an old chair ,they were super glued down and then milliput at each end to anchor them down
