Chuck's ADC build #1 Lockheed F-94B Starfire in 1/72 *Fini*

Post by Chuck Finley »

For the group build, I plan on building a trio of USAF Cold War interceptors. My first build is the recently released Lockheed F-94B Starfire by Sword in 1/72. The aircraft will be #51-54491952 that was assigned to the 319th FIS (Fighter Interceptor Squadron) at Suwon AB in South Korea. This aircraft was credited with shooting down a North Korean fighter (La-9) on 30 January 1953 during a night interdiction mission north of the bombline.

It'll be interesting to see how this goes together.

Nice choice. I've never seen the Sword kit before.

It's a Sword kit and not as easy to build as a Hasegawa or Tamiya kit. That said, it comes with pre-painted photoetch, nice decals, and an injection canopy. It shouldn't be any more difficult than the T2V Seastar sitting on my shelf.

I finished the basic build. Sword was very nice in providing a pre-painted photoetch cockpit set that really brings out the model.

Added a the last photo-etch to the cockpit and will attach the canopy tomorrow. It's interesting to have the F-94B and F-94C side by side for comparison and see the changes from the 'B' to the 'C'.

Thanks, the etch really improves the cockpit.

Whenever doing a NMF finish, I first paint the other colors, mask, then coat the aircraft in gloss black before adding the al-clad.

Another good looking, progressive build. I am starting to envy the willpower to do three of them in one build.

Almost done. I have run into a problem with my Alclad aluminum paint flaking off in some sections, requiring a quick touch-up. Otherwise, it's on to decals.

Lockheed F-94B-5-LO flown by Captain Ben Fithian and Lt. Samuel Lyons, 319th FIS, Suwon, South Korea, 1952.
On January 30, 1953, this crew scored the first night victory in a F-94 by shooting down what is believed to be a La-9
