Emil becomes Dora **DONE**

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

My first placeholder for this Build is the reviled 1960's Revell boxing of the Me109E, hopefully transformed and redeemed into something else. If I still have time I will also tackle either the Airfix Me109G-6 or the A-Model Me109Z.

Cleared up the parts as best I could and have already punched out the supercharger intake, filling it in with scrap plastic and a bit of putty in a little while. This kit should be fairly easy to turn into a Dora since the underwing radiators are separate parts and can be left off without any surgery.....

Well now I have got around to removing the chin intake and skinned it over with some plastic card. Once it is dry and sanded I will install a bigger chin radiator in its place. As the underwing radiator I salvaged from a parts Emil doesn't look right I have decided to fashion one from a plastic fork if you can believe it. The underwing cannon blisters have also been Dremeled out of existence an are being faired over with scrap plastic inside the wing and putty over the top.

How on earth do you make a radiator from a plastic fork?!!

It was a bit of a process but what I did was take a piece of plastic fork whose handle I thought might make a good seaplane pontoon and then also realised that a piece of cross section would be about the same size and shape of that big radiator that the Jumoschmitts had. Here it is being faired in after I sanded down the chin area for it to fit. I glued in pieces of thinned sprue and guitar string to approximate the interior and grille.....

As you can see I sanded off the Daimler Benz exhausts and will drill holes to glue somewhat more appropriate stacks into the cowling. The oil cooler intake has been added to a peculiar position next to the port side landing gear bay. I am also performing surgery on the airscrew and spinner to a two blade variable pitch type.

Sanding and filling and sanding...almost like doing a fifty year old Airfix kit.....anyhoo, I have sanded the heck out of the cowling area and drilled holes and filled them with stretched sprue that will be the new Jumo exhausts. As you can see I have finally wrestled that piece of plastic fork cross section into the shape and size of a Jumoschmitt's big radiator bath. A carbeurator intake has been fashioned from scrap and attached to the upper deck as well. I have also scribed in a few of the more visible panel lines as well. Sanding and priming should come fairly soon. I still have to wrangle the Zwilling and Gustav into shape.

Ah that's looking good. Better than forking out for a new kit...

Ha ha! Yes! Anyways, much futzing about with drilling holes for those dumb exhausts, which in spite of my best efforts kept going crooked. But I think I prevailed. Anyhoo, some grey primer and this is where we are at.....

Fumbling along on the Dora. I have decided that the primer I used will function also as the basis for the main paint scheme. The whole airframe was done in a not too overboard wash, wiped where necessary and augmented with graphite pencil marks and erased graphite from an eraser that I squooshed into the paint here and there which seems to enhance the worn look. The scratchmade exhausts were again not a success so I will attempt again soon. In the meantime the exhaust areas were painted up. Then white recognition bands were handpainted on as well.

At least the Dora is done. Now I can concentrate on the other two.
