My second build is the KP 1/72 scale Avia S-199. Here are the obligatory box and sprue shots.

Nice score! Is this a new tool Sakeen? I have one but I think it is of 1970's/80' provenance. Looks pretty sweet.

Work began by painting and assembling the really well designed cockpit, that done I joined the fuselage halves together and set them aside to dry.

The wing did throw a spanner in the works however as when I tried to join the upper and lower halves together they would not fit, being held apart by about one milimetre by the rear radiator grills, the picture below shows the lower wing half with on the left the radiator grill assembled as per kit and on the right with the rear grill re-glued in place against the front grill to allow the wing to close up properly.

The fuselage and wing have each now been assembled.

When the wing was joined to the fuselage a very slight gap at the root and shallow step at the leading edge were found and had to be corrected.

The airframe is taking shape now and is almost ready for paint, the instructions were not all that helpful here as although there were a number of parts optional to different S-199s and were marked "according to camouflage" the instructions did not explain to which aicraft the parts were to be applied to- some guesswork was unfortunately necessary here. The S-199 was built by two companies, Aero and Avia and there were differences between aircraft built at the two plants but without the essential information or a picture of the actual full size machine sorting this out is somewhat difficult.

Annoyingly, the instructions for my ongoing Revell '109 make it clear that you can build various sub types, but in a lot of cases it is not explained which part is to be used for which variant. It's a right pain!

I know it had a bad reputation but I always thought the S-199 was the most attractive looking member of the 109 family.

If this was a Spitfire or Hurricane I would have no trouble sorting this out but I am a stranger to the BF109 and its derivatives and do not have the books on my shelves needed to solve this.

I've read criticism of the vagueness of the instructions in this KP kit in the past David. I'm not a huge expert on the type either and nowadays I tend to use Google, particularly Google Images, in an attempt to sort out issues such as this!

Regardless of the differences between the types built by either company (I thought it was strictly an Avia produced machine) this will look a stunner when you are finished with it. Definitely have to get myself one, and probably do another Israeli machine.

The model was then primed and painted, the decals will go on next and then the end will be in sight.

Looking good David. Deflecting the elevators gives it a more candid look too - quite often photos of parked '109s show some degree of elevator and/or rudder deflection.
