Paint it black - **FINISHED**

Post by Purplethistle »

I'm hoping to bring to life one of Iain Kennedys classic Commando comic covers using the Hobby Boss Zero type 52. (Complete with old one shilling price on the cover. :-D )

'Black Zero' was a comic I had in the early 70s that I still vividly remember as one of the 'Perfect Commando books'. Quite often the book would have an exciting, well painted cover but the actual story was illustrated by another artist who didn't quite live up to the promise. Black Zero, however was done by my two favourite Commando artists (whose names I didn't know at the time, but whose style I immediately recognised) Ian Kennedy did the cover and Jose Maria Jorge did the actual story. As a lad I used to draw planes and tanks on any scrap of paper I could lay hands on and along with Roy Cross' Airfix box art, these two were my 'Go to guys' for the references that I used.
I always thought that Ian Kennedys dynamic artwork fairly leapt out of the cover at you, Hopefully I can actually make it so..... :-D

Three coats of semi gloss black, but the section between the rear of the cowling and the rear of the canopy remain stubbornly matt.

Being an Easy Build job, this one didn't take much putting together. Most of the work was getting Tojo to fit into the seat and hand painting the dragons on the sides.
This will be wheels up for the finale, but I thought I'd just pose it before setting it against the backdrop.

Brilliant dragon painting, PT! I think it's actually better than that shown on the book cover!
