WNW 1/32 2F1 "Ship's Camel"

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

My contribution, hopefully - I have a small traffic jam the 1st week of the month which could be an impact on a project needing lots of paint and detail attention. I picked the Ship's Camel to go along with my first WNW kit, the Naval Pup.

Very nice - as to be expected with wnw. I'm surprised that's the sum total of the p/e though!

At 1/32 scale and with WNW attention to detail, much of the "PE" is done in styrene - for example, all the metalwork on the struts and the fuselage stringers, etc.

I did order the Datafile on the 2F1 - realized I have no Camel references. There was a 2F1 that traded the Vickers for a 2nd Lewis atop the wing and I'm wondering if I can come up with some detail on the Admiralty Lewis Mount. Of course I really don't have time to be fiddling about, but ....

I have primered much of it with Tamiya rattlecan TS-46 Light Sand and TS-68 Deck Tan for the interior.
I found that I had restocked my narrow masking tape, so that will not be a problem.
I cut the main fuselage and flying surfaces from the sprue and cleaned all that up.

I did have one cabane strut break but it's repaired.

I have tried to get details on the double Admiralty Top Plane Mount, but no joy. I wanted to have an aircraft with a Zep kill, but guess not. I have some time, I might keep looking. From the sole picture I have, I can just about make out that it is not a doubled up single Admiralty Mount and it's not a double Foster. It almost looks like the guns are fixed, but that means no swapping out ammo drums ?

Anyway, off for a few days so I'll pick up next week.

Drat !!! I was spraying some TS-62 as primer for dark wood and rebroke that cabane strut -- this will obviously be a weak point. I am thinking to wrap some very thin tape around it and at the same place on the opposite strut to match and just painting over. Think of it as a field modification.

I did not get the rib masking done over the weekend or even today, but would hope to start tomorrow and can start pre-shading, etc. I am gone again this weekend. I'm making this more of a problem that it should be but cannot help it, well except for my clumsiness.

Finally !!!

I started "graining" the dark wood. I first painted with TS-62 rattlecan, now I am using Vallejo Ocher and some other lighter wood colors to add some grain - this is in reverse of my usual practice, but it come out a bit closer to the pix of a museum piece in the instruction booklet.

I have also started some assembly and painting of cockpit interior bits. The instruction booklet is not overly clear on placement of some parts and contains at least one part drawing error.

No pix, let me get a bit further along to show something significant.

I can imagine there is no shortage of fine detail painting on one of these kits before construction can get anywhere. Add to that, much of it being woodgrain. Keep us posted :)

Yes, much of which is then invisible
I'm not so much of after a grain look as a texture look. The Camel seems, as I think you mentioned elsewhere, to be a preponderance of dark woods which has thrown off my usual routine.

Sorry, been traveling and busy. In between I have been futzing with wood, resulting in this pile.

Image

I've been making mistakes by winging it and have to repaint some parts -- not as organized as on other WNW kits. I think I'm over most of that and can start on all the detail painting of cockpit parts, etc ....

I hope to show a bit more regular progress from here on.

I used Tamiya rattle can TS-62, Nato Brown, for the base. Then various Vallejo and AK wood paints to simulate "grain" by variation, not actually try to make it grainy. Then I tied it together by TA Clear Orange or Clear Yellow for variety. As I go along, I'll do touch-ups with various woods just to add more variety. Right now, I've started the instruments on the IP and all the lines and fittings on the sidewalls, plus the black metal fittings at the joins. I cannot seem to get a full day undisturbed.
