VV builds a Comic and a Barker **Finished**

I couldn't resist picking up Roden's 1/72 Sopwith F.1/3 Comic Home Defence fighter. For one thing, YCNHTMSCs and for another, I quite liked the ghost grey/white scheme. I then decided to work it into a piece of Biggles WW1 fan-fictionin which he takes on a Gotha night raider while home on leave in London (which I never finished writing ). Maybe the build will get the writing mojo going again.

So, the kit....

Usual Roden fare. Nice detail but not over the top. Probably a few fit issues here and there to contend with but nothing insurmountable. Decals likely to explode on contact with water.
It will be OOB with the scheme on the box art.

As always when building a Sopwith, J M Bruce will be there to help me out

I've decided to amalgamate my two threads into one because progress shots will inevitably be of both models.

My second build is the William Barker Camel.

Billy Barker was an absolute legend. His exploits were the sort of thing that inspired stories like Biggles. Not the least of which was his epic battle in a snipe with something like 60 Fokker D.VIIs

This is a pilot well worth acknowledging with some builds.

I built his Snipe (Eastern Express) about a decade ago and I want to add his Camel and Bristol Fighter to the display. His Camel B6313 was the aircraft he scored most of his victories in.

The 1/72 Roden kit is straightforward Roden-ness. I will be building it concurrently with my Comic as I've found that there is an economy of scale when it comes to painting wood effect on struts, props and the like (....well, up to a point, anyway).

I will need to create a tail decal as it is not in the kit - a love heart with a white arrow through it. The version of B6313 Roden provides decals for is not the exact scheme that I want to represent (it changed through its service life, it seems).

It being June 1 here in the Antipodes I've made a start. Nothing to much to show, just a base coat of primer before starting any wood effect in the cockpit.

Wood effect on interior paneling, struts and props. Near invisible at this scale.
For the fuselage panels, the darker colour is the humbrol clear orange overcoat and the brighter is the gunze. Very different!

I've lost one seat and they're highly inaccurate anyway so I'm going to scratch build two.

Thanks. Yes, comic is at left. I have 1mm tape - it makes seat belts very easy.

I have the linen colour down andon't tried the ghost Grey on that Comic. A little too Brown for my liking but it will have to do.

Long weekend has provided plenty of bench time. Both are now at about the same level of completion as the three Biggles Camels that have been stalled out for the last 2 years. Who knows, maybe I'll get them all finished by the end of this GB. ...

The black has gone on the Barker Camel and the turtle deck woodgrain on the comic. This build is also, as hoped, pushing the three other Roden camels along that have been stalled for two years. I could well have five built by the end of this.
