Daz's Waldo Pepper warbird....

Post by DazDaMan »

When I was growing up, this was one of my favourite films....

If you haven't seen it, I thoroughly recommend it. Not only is it a great story, with a very likable main character played by Robert Redford, but the aerial sequences are fantastically well done. All done for real, too!

Towards the end of the film, a Sopwith Camel is featured doing mock dogfights with a Fokker Dr.1 triplane. Looks something like this:

Ergo, this will be the subject of the build!

Point of fact, I've actually seen this Camel in the flesh, when it was part of a museum collection based at Wycombe Air Park in Buckinghamshire. It sat next to a Fokker E.III and a Stampe SV.4c, both of which had appeared in the film Aces High, which is another of my favourites!

I'll be building this kit for this GB:

Nice one. It's a great movie - I really need to own a copy.

You'll be needing to print your own decals presumably?

I'll try to use the kit's decals as far as possible. I might have some stuff in the spares box that will work, too.

My Camel arrived today!

I doubt I'll get much done over the weekend, so it's a Monday start for me.

The Revell kit goes together nicely so you should be able to make a swift progress :D

Well, after a change of plans, I shall be able to commence battle with the Camel today!

(Incidentally, this mention of Aces High has made me think about building the Fokker E.III from the film, and possibly also a Tiger Moth, as the type also played a baddie in that film!)

So, I made a start this evening:

Not an awful lot to it, is there? Shouldn't be too difficult to piece together!

Started off with painting some of the sub-assemblies...

And it's away! Are you planning to give the prop any grain effect or just go with plain brown? I reckon a few streaks of slightly darker brown, then a coat of clear orange should bring it up a treat :D

Camel props that I've seen are quite dark in colour and the laminations are barely visible, so at 1/72 the wood effect is very subtle and easy to achieve. I think it makes a heap of difference to the finished product though :D

So the fuselage of the Camel has been glued together.

I've decided to replace the rather horrid pilot with one that doesn't look half as bad!

Daren, did you know that Revell sold a waldo Pepper version of their 1/28 scale Camel when the film was released ?
