Beany's Eduard 1/48 kit with Colourful Camel Decals

Post by beany »

I've had this kit and these decals knocking around for about 10 years. I was helping the local ATC Squadron with model making for their annual Wing Field Day competition - one of the required build themes that year was the Sopwith Camel in 1/48th scale. In order to make our model stand out I purchased a set of Blue Rider Colourful Camel decals. We used the Red and White chequer board pattern decals on their model (it came third) and I shall use the remaining Starburst White and Red trainer scheme on this build.

The Eduard kit also comes with masks - for the wheels rather than the cockpit canopy for a change, and a set of PE including seat belts. I don't have much patience for fiddly PE so it remains to be seen how much, if any of it, gets used.

Here is the kit and the Blue Rider decal sheet.

Work started with the engine. As soon as I saw the fragile looking parts on the sprues I suspected disaster lay ahead. It did.

So I opted to replace the push rods with strips of brass rod - a tedious job that I didn't put a gargantuan effort into in terms of accuracy but from a distance it should do the trick and hopefully look better once painted.

I have already hand painted some of the red on to things like the struts, wheels and fuselage halves, so that was masked up then it was into the shed this afternoon for a spray with Halford Appliance white, as I don't want to place too much reliance on the wing decals being a perfect fit.

Nice work Al. Mine is kicking my behind but making some progress.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale
