OT's Swashbuckler *** Finished ***

Post by Old_Tonto »

My entry for this group build is the venerable old Airfix 1/72 Buccaneer kit.

Image

I intend to build the South African version but not the delivery scheme as supplied in the box.
That scheme was short lived in service being replaced by the Extra Dark Sea Grey over PRU blue. It should end up looking like this:

Here are the decals and sprue shots:

I also have some resin bits to fix a couple of issues.

I hope to get started on this later today.

Goodie! A Brick is coming out to play :-D

I found it to be a nice kit, if a little basic on the detail front and no real bad points that I recall; I hope it's an enjoyable build for you OT 8-)
Best wishes

A lovely day for model making outside - it's far too hot at over 30° in the attic room.

So onto construction. I will leave the seats out until after painting. They are not the best but I've never been one for detailing pits.
The engine blades are a perfect fit.

Image

Despite its age the vortex generators on the wing are commendably thin:

The wings went together with no issues too. :)
Taking on plenty of fluids in this heat.

Eduard provides a really nice cockpit set for the Buccaneer that makes a great improvement to the kit. I used it for my Royal Navy version

They do look rather good Chuck. I'll have to work with the kit ones I have left it too late now. Great looking buck you have there.

Well it would seem that the honeymoon period is over with this kit once I fitted the top & bottom halves together. They fit where they touch.
Both fuselage halves are a little deformed at the nose and the top half seems twisted to the right.
I guess the molds are showing their age. Nothing a bit of filler and elbow grease won't fettle.
In the end I had to stick the front section together, let that dry then work my way along aligning the parts and gluing every couple of inches, clamping, leave to dry etc.
I got there in the end although every join will need filling and sanding. Thanks to all that effort the outer wings are a decent fit. 8-)
The wing going on:

Now it is beginning to look like a brick. :-D

I'll get to work on the seams tonight.

Use the post image function on the forum, OT, it's free (at least currently!) and very easy to use.

Will try that Shaun but for now I'm testing Imgur as FB has become ransomware. I have lost all trust in FB and as I have quite a collection of images on there I need an alternative. Can you confirm that you can see these images?

Got the nose attached. A little filler but should clean up fine.

Image

I think this is supposed to be a refuelling probe? :???:

More images soon. 8-)

Yes, no probs seeing the latest image at my end as well. Plenty of old skool filling and sanding then (welcome to my world :ha: ). I'm not at all certain as to the "detail" on that refuelling probe - it's the ball shaped section in particular - I've had a quick scan of Buccs on Google Images just for you and the kit part looks nowt like really but that said I don't think it would be too difficult to re-work the end of the probe to improve it.

Apologies for the lack of updates chaps but I am still testing out image hosting sites that allow 3rd party links.
Don't get me started on Photobucket.

So to the Buccaneer build. The tail was a pain to fit but some super glue & filler sorted that.

Image

Once that was cured I got some primer on from a rattle can.

Image

I left that to dry overnight then it was time for a couple of coats of Extra Dark Sea Grey.

Image

I do like these Xtracrylixs paints. Especially for British colours (which the South Africans used).
Considering it's age this is going pretty well so far. Next I plan to mask off and paint the undersides PRU blue followed by decaling the cockpit area.
The seats will need a fare amount of attention too as they are a bit basic. Once they are done I can close up the office area.
Tomorrow I should be able to show you the improved RF probe I've bodged together from the kit part and my spares box.

More to follow. :smilie_flagge3:
