Jeff's 180 in the bush

Post by jssel »

This will be where I build the Monogram Cessna 180 in 1/41 box scale. First appearing in 1957 as a float equipped version, in 1964 re-issued as a wheeled version. My goal is to add Bushmaster large tires on mine via Greg. See, the power of the Internet model club.

This is a bagged kit so no boxart.

Pictures up when I get to my home coordinates.

Looking forward to this one. I didn't know they had done a floatplane version. Wish I had got hold of that one.

All the best.

I have dug out the wheels. Two pairs. The black ones are Matchbox and the grey ones Airfix. My preference would be the Matchbox but it's up to you. I have pictured then with the kit wheels and undercart so you can judge the size. They do not look it but the two pairs of mossie wheels are about the same size. The Matchbox ones have a more bulbous appearance and a smaller hub.

All the best.

Perfect Greg and thanks.

OK here we go. Like I say it is a bag kit obtained at a show quite some time ago. The wings have been glued together but other than that, not really much headway. The previous owner placed the loose parts in a small poly bag.

The kit is very heavily riveted so will tone those down a titch. The real deal had raised rivets.

Now the base plan is to build it without a back seat and an enlarged baggage compartment. Plus of course the enlarged wheels for landing on river banks in the "North Country".

Today was spent cleaning parts and buffing down rivets. The flight deck was cut off and sheet styrene attached for the extended baggage compartment. I am missing the starboard exhaust system so the cowling will be firmly attached.

Also settled on a 50's paint scheme of cream and root beer color. Will leave the wings bare metal.

Sounds like a good start. I am not extending the compartment but will probably be adding the rear wall. I will probably do the box scheme but will have to guesstimate the interior colour so I am going with white and yellow. Incidentally the aircraft depicted in the kit is still flying in Australia.

All the best.

Great factoid Greg. Never thought to try the FAA database on line. Lots of Google Image searching show little interior shots. There is a Company in Idaho that makes conversion bits for the 180/185 fleet. Just finished a book "The last of the Bush Pilots". More or less the history of the Alaska air ops. I get the impression that gross weight specs change daily. Pumped me full of inspiration.

Throwing my mind back to the 180 I used to work on - I think the interior was red plastics and red carpet - but there was a huge range of colours in all the Cessna's I worked on, you could pretty much paint it however you like.

Initial interior color has been added. My intention is to do the interior with the exterior colors. Testors enamel mix here of light yellow, cream and white.

Oh, and most of the sink hole filling and knockout tab marks are filled and sanded down.

Interior painting roughed in. The cabin panels are surrounded by raised lines. These will be touched with a silver Prismatic pencil to simulate piping.

I have begun working on the instrument panel. I noticed that the "sacred six" are molded out of alignment.

Just about to a point where I can start slapping this one together.

Great progress. Looks like we had similar ideas for the inside trim.

All the best.

Maybe it's a parallel universe thing.
