Sorry for the late start but the Photobucket fiasco has drawn my attention away for a short while, I now have my own webspace and have resized and retitled all my images and will replace the PB markers with my own images in stages starting with ongoing builds. This is my first Cessna build from the Airfix O-1 Bird Dog kit using Print Scale Decal Sheet 72-131. Work began on the 10th.
To begin, here are the box and sprue shots.

It has been many years since I last built this model and my stashed kit is from the last boxing, despite this the parts are in good condition despite a number of ejector pin marks and the age of the tooling. My chosen markings are for an early machine which was used to carry President Elect Dwight D. Eisenhower on a tour of Korea in 1952, this will be an excellent companion to my build of the P-51B used to carry Eisenhower over the Normandy beaches in 1944. The first task was to clean up the cockpit sidewalls and assemble & paint the cockpit parts, Airfix called for Humbrol 64 for the cockpit interior but pictures of surviving examples show the cockpit to be in a light Olive colour so I went with that and used Revell Aqua Light olive 45. The overly thick side windows were left out and the openings will be glazed with glue'N Glaze later.

The wings and fuselage halves were then assembled.

A good start. Nice one David. Interesting choice of markings too. Incidentally I am most of the way through a P51 called 'Short fuse Sallee' that was one of the flight that escorted Eisenhower in the 2 seater.

All the best.

Greg

That sounds interesting Greg, did the decals come with the kit?

David.

It's an aftermarket sheet. I will dig it out and let ypu know which one. I read about the escort mission in the book Mustang pilot by Captain Richard Turner, Short fuse Sallee's pilot.

All the best. Greg

The wings have been cemented to the fuselage, the tailplane has been modified by removing the antenae bullets on the leading edge and the tailplane & fin and undercarriage legs have been glued to the model.

The model can now be painted in Olive Drab 34087 AKA Humbrol 155, this particular aircraft had a lighter green panel on the port upper wing, the decal instructions do not give a call out for this so I have mixed a little paint for the purpose using Humbrol 102 with a few drops of yellow.
Image

Before painting the model I realised that I had forgotten to droop the elevaters, this was duly done and the port wing was masked up and painted in Humbrol 155 after which the rest of the airframe was similarly coloured. The model now needs coating in varnish prior to applying the decals.

This is a real shake and bake kit Stuart and one with a good number of possible paint options- a kit that Airfix should seriously consider re-introducing.

Cough cough - you mean David Jeff.. cough cough

It'a a great looking kit though, I'll have to get one. Are you doing the upper windows with glue-n-glaze (or suchlike) as well David?

I do want to build more of these Greg but they are always thin on the ground and ATM this kit is just not available but I do watch kingkit every week for this kit and a few others that I want to add to the stash.

David.
