Splash's Bloodhound ***Finished***

Pre-1980 boxings of any kit, but preferably hard to obtain -- something that would make a collector cringe to see built.

Nice one, Alan, very nice in fact. Missiles make good centre pieces. Although this Bloodhound kit is a great choice, the SAM-2 kit would have cheesed off the collectors the most!

I built the SAM-2 when it first came out and remember it fondly. That's one kit Airfix should re-issue or update.

I'm suprised that Airfix did not extend its range and issue a Army Thunderbird when they did the SAM-2. Also a Rapier set would have been nice.

Re the SAM model market, Bloodhound was cool and British plus came with a Landrover and a dog, both also winners; and the SA-2 was in the news from Vietnam and Yom Kippur...Rapier might have taken iff from the Falkands a decade it so later but Airfix was on the way down by then...

If I hadn't already completed a pair of started and unfinished second hand SAM 2 kits (see my flickr page) I would have gladly done one for this Build. But the other two I have are part of my retirement plan :ha:

I'm happy how the brass tubes worked for the boosters.

Both hounds look good, though the erks look like they have both taken a 50 cal in the breadbasket. Nice work Alan mate. May have to copy your brass tube idea.

All the best.

A coat of White Tamiya primer has not shown up any major problems so I'm a happy bunny :-D

Image

work has started on the blobs of plastic I think Airfix call a Land Rover  now I know little about the great British Icon, although I have driven lots of military versions early and late versions, now to my eye if you look at the first image below, I think Airfix has made the windscreen pillars too thick and the area above the bonnet (hood) too thin giving the windscreen a too square look, so I have thinned the pillars and added strips of plastic to raise the area above the bonnet.

The bonnet and roof are only loose fitted so I can add some extra detail inside.

Having looked at images of old RAF series one LR's I think the top of the windscreen frame needs removing so the roof top becomes the windscreen top frame.

You ought to be happy with that one, it's coming along very well. I can remember visiting 85 Squadron at RAF West Raynham in 1978, when they were Bloodhound equipped, so I'm watching this one with interest. I assume those would have been Mk.IIs?
(Also, great tip with the brass pipe. May have a use for that myself.)
BTW, the crewman seems to have taken an RPG-7 to the chest. Must have stung a bit. :)

Cracking looking Bloodhound Splash and that landy is coming along too.

Can you still use the kit windscreen now or will you have to scratch a new one?

There is a top frame to the windscreen on the Series One, Alan (to which the canvas soft top attaches), but it is much thinner than that depicted by Airfix in the kit. In fact all of the windscreen surround is thinner than OOB in the kit which of course is of its era and IMHO needs a bit of refining as indeed you are undertaking for a better scale appearance.
