An act of Piracy with Airfix London Icons soldiers set

Pre-1980 boxings of any kit, but preferably hard to obtain -- something that would make a collector cringe to see built.

An act of Piracy with Airfix London Icons soldiers set

Post by chrism »

So here we are .... having run this possible gasp enducing option past the selection and approval committee:

I really ought to get out more and/or apply for sanctioning and sectioning, but having recently found and read an old airfix magazine article, a taster of which I publish here as: exhibit A

Image

It is now my intention to conduct an act of heresy using these pieces of plastic, (exhibit B) and attempt to build Long John Silver

Image

The parts from this selection which I have identified I need, will be given an overnight dip in Dettol, thereby rendering them back to an unpainted plastic starting point.

Disclaimer: I do fully realise that the original article used 54mm figures, and I am attempting something stupid with something else; and I shall use parts from all 3 figures in order to cobble just one together .... and if all goes well I shall fully equip him with a parrot and treasure too.

Well me hearties. A pieces of eight from pieces of three. Nice one.
Looking forward to watching the build.

All the best.

Righto me hearties ...

this be a trial fit of parts for what I am proposing to start from:

Image

The Yeoman Warder has donated a leg and probably his head
The Lifeguard gave his body below the waist, and his arms
The Guardsman gave his upper body

Hands - could yet come from anyone and the head may be a compilation of parts, once I get hat sorted,

They have now had the day soaking and I am tonight at this point.

Image

I shall now sit and tape and tame them so that tomorrow glue and filler can be introduced

Off to a good start. Nice one. A bit of piratical potpourri going on. And after that crumby pun as Captain Jack would say, "I need a drink, got any rum?"

All the best.

What are you using for his missing leg?

A doll's house table leg? :ha: :ha: :ha:

Shiver me timbers indeed ... Whatever next !! This is Treasure Island .... he never had a peg leg .... he had a crutch and a parrot. ... and I have a suitable rustic perch to use for the crutch, and a parrot in dolls house scale :ha:

Thank you ....

The initial concept and need for a pirate figure was agreed a few weeks back, amongst a certain yachts crew after a few nights of what some would call "heavy socialising at shorebased evening events" (I cannot say more for fear of a long walk on short gangplank)

A bit of reassembly and some filling and hacking today has got the body to here. I have just given it a coat of black as a primer to check on my bodging of seams and joins.

Image

Before I go too much further with the body, I need to consider the making of a long coat for him to wear, which is where I shall make the arms fit too.

Turning to the head, I started with the Yeomans face and hat and then packed little bits from the heads of the other two and some plasticard around, and so far got to here.

Image

I have no time now before Wednesday to get back onto this, so by then the glue should be hard, and I can start and carve and pack more to get head onto the body. Only when I am happy with the head, will I shall trim and remove some of the hat brim, and make a new one which can be shaped better for a tricorn type sailor hat....

Not a lot of progress today ... I spend a while tonight wrestling Captain Flint off Queen Elizabeth (some people will understand ;-) ), things turned somewhat messy, the claret flowed and I am now convalescing with with a plaster on my hand.

Thanks for your concern over my poorly paw, and I am struggling along.

Ah ... a Dead parrot ...you jest .... ...

As you can see I did a spot of customisation on the tunic from the guardsman which originally buttoned up to the neck, and have turned it into a waistcoat.

The hat which the yeoman wore has now had the brim taken off, and the head is now fixed on, and that enabled me to tidy up the join with the body, by creating the cravatte scarf type thing that they wore (probably been watching too much Poldark and getting ideas... ;-) )

I have had to fix the arms, at this stage, and am now assuming them to be shirt-sleeves.
Once this has all set hard overnight, I shall be able to handle it again, and can start to give some thought to making some paper parts to use as a trial and test my approach for an overcoat for him.
