Paul B's Frog Sea Fury

Pre-1980 boxings of any kit, but preferably hard to obtain -- something that would make a collector cringe to see built.

Paul B's Frog Sea Fury

Post by PaulBradley »

After a months long slump, I'm in the mood for modelling! I committed to the Frog Sea Fury for Telford, so this is the idea motivation and venue to start that kit.

The kit dates from 1963, and I have an original boxing. It's fairly accurate in shape, but very basic in detail. The wings are broken such that they can be folded, though it is rather crude. No interior detail to speak of and very basic weaponry. However, I do have the Airwaves wing fold set, an Eduard pre-painted PE set (meant for the Trumpeter kit) and various little bits and bobs left over from the PM, Special Hobby and Aki kits that I've previously built. How much of this that I'll use is still up for consideration - I don't want to push my mojo too far..... I also have some spare Xtradecals left over for a basic FAA machine.

I don't know anything about this kit. But from the looks of it and all the extras you have for it, I think it's going to be quite a looker when done!

This is going to be more than a bit special. Looking forward to following this build.

This will be fun to watch. I see you have some PE are you going to fold the wings?

Hi Alan,

The wing parts are already split, so it is my intent to build them folded with the Airwaves set. It depends on how much work it actually is - I haven't really investigated that so far.

The kit interior consisted of a floor, back plate and armchair, so I ditched the armchair, added a proper seat and some PE:

A little scruffy in this exploded image, but it looks fine now that the fuselage is closed up..... :ha:

Nice work on the interior, Paul. Is this like most Frog classics - accurate in shape?

It's 50/50 on accuracy David, a product of it's time but it was as good as it got until PM and Trumpeter released their Sea Furies. Now the special Hobby is the best to be had with Trumpeter in second place IMO but even that has it's faults and we still (im)patiently wait for the definitive Sea Fury.

It's surprising what a bit of PE can do to tart up an old dog timeless classic like this, Paul. Nice looking cockpit and it'll look good with the wings folded.

Cheers, guys. It has its (small) faults but is generally good, shapewise. I'll not be doing a lot to it in that respect - life's too short, and I want to concentrate on getting the wingfold done nicely.
