My entry for this GB is this hasegawa F-5A in 1/72scale. The original dates from 1967 but this boxing is the 1970 release.

The decals look shot so I am planning to do this as a pre-revolution Iranian RF-5A using decals from the spares box and a new nose left over from the ESCI 'Skoshi Tiger' boxing.

I'll probably have a crack at doing the Asia Minor camo scheme if time permits.
Planning on getting started tonight.

I got started last night on this and before too long I had the parts cleaned up and the fuselage together:

Image

As you can see these are the main parts. The only tricky bits IIRC are the engine intakes. Each has too not very well fitting pieces so some careful sticking and sanding was needed but they look OK.
Next I attached the wing section that was a great fit then the tail planes and rear fuselage section that is not a good fit and will need plenty of filler.
I decided to fit the nose section and once that has set overnight I'll cut & shunt the recce nose section in place. This is where I got up to:

Image

As you can see there is no interior detail in the cockpit so I'll have to do something about that as the canopy reveals all in an F-5.
A seat is provided but does not look much like the original so will either be modified or replaced. No sidewall or IP either but I do have a spare decal for the IP and behind the seat should be a mass of equipment and some big hinges for the canopy although obviously less visible will need to be represented.

I'll fit a couple of wing-tip fuel tanks from the spares box too as I have never seen a recce F-5 with Sidewinders. So still plenty to do but a good start.

Just a quick update today. I managed to get the recon nose fitted and some wing-tip tanks. Both came from an old Esci kit judging by the colour.

I've also found a more realistic seat and started to build up an interior.
More to follow. :smilie_flagge3:

You don't muck around, do you!

It's looking good. I'm not normally much of a one for jets but this one I like. Something about the shape.

Coming along nicely Ian, especially when you consider what you have to work with :)

Where did you get the seat from?

Just a bit of progress today.
I made an accurate seat from one that looked similar to the Northrop original with the head rest made from the tip of a coffee stirrer. 8-)
Just need to touch up the paintwork, weather it a little, add some gubbings behind the seat then get the canopy on.
Image

I scratched the IP and then applied an old Microscale decal which fought back all the way but at least it's settling down now.

Image

The canopy has has a couple of Klear coats but is not the best. It also has a small chip out of the back end but that part will be painted so I should be able to fill it once attached.
This Tiger is also up on it's rather spindly U\C and has had a coat of primer applied.

Image

The interior at least looks reasonable now. I'm not very happy with the kit supplied rudder - it seems a little undersized so will get some attention before painting begins.
Still, not bad for a 50 year old kit.

Camera ships generally look very smart. Nice scratching going on here.

Wow is that impressive how you turned a hole into such a convincing "front office".

This one is going to be a real looker!

Thanks for the kind words guys. :)
Slow progress on this one as life is getting in the way but I managed to get some bench time tonight and apply the first paint colour.

The scheme will be my version of the 'Asia Minor' camouflage pattern.
The sand colour is known as 'Tan

Special' which I can't find an equivalent to so I went with Tamiya XF-57 Buff.
I'm hoping it will darken somewhat once Klear has been applied.

It looks like I've knocked the camera nose section!

Will sort that out in the morning and apply the green & brown sections of the camo too.
This is the scheme on an F-5A.

Must remember to paint the camera section lenses and mask them off before I get too far with the painting.

More to follow. :smilie_flagge3:
