Well the Britannia is starting to come together even if it doesn't seem to be enjoying the process.

Next up is attaching the wings & tail planes.

Thank you for your comments, gents. I find your confidence inspiring!

The Britannia has been released from bondage.

Image

This kit surprised me in a way I didn't expect.

Image

You see, none of the parts are actually glued on.

Image

The tabs on the wings are handed so they interlock inside the fuselage.

Image

I think that's some pretty impressive tolerances molded into such a vintage kit.

On to paint next...

No fair! I call foul! No gaping wing joint to fill and sand. Unacceptable.

Just kidding. That's looking pretty spectacular already. Have fun in the paint shop!

That looks kind of impressive even without paint......

And tight tolerances ahead of many a younger kit!

The major paint work is done.

Image

I know, it's a bit flashy and touch-ups will probably be needed.

That is coming along very nicely! And just for the recording I rescind my earlier post. You really do have a great kit there.

The Britannia is in the home stretch now.

After breakfast this morning I finally got up the courage to paint the nose cone black.

Image

Image

It was done free-hand with the old hairy stick after the cheatline and window decals were on.

Image

Speaking of window decals, I totally wimped out and instead of painting those windows, I used the cockpit window decals from a 1/144 Boeing 707. I didn't think my hand was steady enough to paint all those tiny squares.

Image

The props aren't glued on yet so I can get them out of the way before putting on the rest of the decals. More to follow later.

I managed to get the rest of the decals on without too much trouble.

Image

Image

The Britannia Airways livery was swiped from a 1/144 Airfix Boeing 737.

Image

Image

Image

Image

While the Airfix decals went on fine, the kit decal for the stand disintegrated on me when I put it down.

Image

I made a replacement using a leftover from the 737 decals and a white stripe from a sheet for an Amiot 143.

Image

The model is painted by hand using the old hairy stick and acrylics, Model Masters Gloss White Primer on the fuselage and Polly Scale Silver on the wings and tail planes. The cowlings were finished with Model Masters Steel. Model Masters Gray Primer and Insignia Yellow were used on the props. The nose cone was painted with Model Masters Flat Black.

Image

I had a blast building this old kit and I'd like to thank Gregers for leading this GB and everyone else who is playing along or just stopped by to take a look.

That is very impressive hairy stick work, what's your secret lots of thin coats?
