Re: VV'S black tripehound
Well, I'm back from hols AND I've finished my Golden Oldie GB entry, so it's time to get stuck into this.
Here's the Eduard kit:
Good level of detail without being OTT. Ideal for me. No photoetch, which is also fine. I prefer moulded on detail and less fussing about, especially for interiors that are barely seen.
I'll give it a bath and then by the time I get back from taking the family out for fish & chips by a world-class harbour on this glorious sunny Spring day , it should be ready to get started on....ultimately transforming it into this:

Re: VV'S black tripehound
So have made a start. A coat of tan laid down for all fabric or wood surfaces. Wood effect applied to the cockpit floor and the sidewall. I masked using narrow tape to get the triangle of wood on the forward part of the fuselage.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
Not much progress other than coating the woodgrain with clear yellow. However, I have decided to upgrade an old Airfix Triplane I built as a Biggles model. I made it with a pilot and no interior but I don't like displaying my models with figures unless they're part of a diorama, so it looks out of place in the cabinet. I am using the Eduard kit as a guide to model a cockpit interior to insert. I will also replace the guns and prop, as the Airfix items are atrociously bad.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
Oh, and while I'm updating.....
This is an Oberursel UR.II:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... I_USAF.jpg;
Which was a clone of the Le Rhone 9J:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... l_9J_2.JPG;
On the left is the Eduard kit part (no photoetch to add, that's all you get) for the UR.II and on the right is a spare Le Rhone 9J from a Roden Camel kit:
Yeah, I'll be using the Roden item, thanks.
Not really up to scratch, Eduard....

Re: VV'S black tripehound
The seat belts come a a decal in this kit, which is a welcome change from making my own from tape.
The cockpit is together and the engine retailed. Next step will be to close up the fuselage.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
Using the Eduard interior as a template, I've now put in an interior of sorts in the old Airfix model, after butchering it to carve off the peg sticking out of the sidewall for the pilot. The seat is a generic spare from a Roden kit, with tamiya tape belts. Hard to see it all, but it's hard to see into a WW1 fighter cockpit in this scale anyway, so it's all good...

Thanks, Marky.
Well, the first week back at work after holidays has not been kind. I've managed to get some spraying done this morning though.
I couldn't figure out the exact shade of blue that should be used for the linen, so I just went with what I had in rattle can.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
Looking good from here as well, VV. I have to say that I'm not very impressed with Eduard's attempt at the engine either, I would have expected better from them...
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
And while we're at it, the guns are pretty light on... Again, Roden seems to have it in spades over this kit. Eduard must rely really heavily on photoetch but if they don't provide any in a kit, they're actually providing less detail than in significantly cheaper kits.
For reference, the Roden kit cost $12. When I ordered one, the seller didn't have it (after I had already paid). I asked them to substitute this, which was $20 or more, and which they did. I expected higher quality and more detail, given the difference.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
That's looking really good VV, the cockpit looks great. It's a shame so little of it will be seen.
Comparisons between the Eduard and Roden kits are interesting. I have to agree the detail looks much better on the Roden kit, but based on my experience with their 1/48 kits I have to wonder how well they go together. If you've built any of Roden's 1/72 WW1 subjects I'd be interested in your comments.
Looking forward to your progress on the Fokker.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
I've built three of their Camels (with another 7 still under construction), the F.1 and the Felixstowe. I'm halfway through the SE.5a
Their engineering and parts fit is definitely inferior to Eduard. As an example, the Camel either has outer struts too short or cabane struts too long, I haven't figured out which, but it's impossible to mount the wing without it being banana shaped unless you trim the cabanes down.
I've also built two Toko Sopwith Strutters and I ended up throwing away the W struts because they just were not cooperating. At all.
For myself though, I'd prefer a few fit issues to deal with than having to scratchbuild missing detail that really should have been provided given the cost of the kit.

Re: VV'S black tripehound
Thanks Daz.
Work has been crushing the life out of me, as usual, so nothing on this until this weekend. The streaked green is on now, then it will be time to spray in white, then mask for the black stripe.
