Marky's DR.1 Werner Voss. ***FINISHED***

I have to get my 1/28th kit from the loft so this is another placeholder!. Although the kit artwork shows an all red triplane, I think I will try and do Werner Voss's aircraft which was dark green. I don't really know how good he was but there is the report of him taking on at least six RFC aircraft (I've seen two accounts that disagree on the number of opponents, but one says they were formidable RFC pilots). That sort of bravery deserves some plastic tribute IMHO!!
(It is a Revell kit by the way and will go alongside my same scale Camel).

Voss flew the F.1. [103/17]
He was shot down in a battle with 8 RAF.
The main visual diffrence between the F.1 and a Dr.1 is the F doesn't have the lower wing's wing-tip skids

Thanks Fred, that's something I didn't know. I'll see what I can find as far as reference but I can always go with the kit scheme. I was basing this on the Airfix DR.1 of Voss's but obviously Airfix didn't catch the detail either!!

Edit: just looked for F.1 and Wikipedia (!!!) have a side view and a small amount of info. Glad you mentioned this Fred. Ta.

In addition to the lower wing skids it would appear that the tailplane of the F.1 also has a slightly curved leading edge. I looked at Wiki's entry for the Dr.1 and reading through the text clicked on the sentence referring to the slight convex curve to the tailplane l/e whereupon a half decent image of the other F.1 built (serial no: 102/17, there were only ever two) is displayed that clearly shows the difference - it shouldn't be too difficult a job to make the necessary changes to a Dr.1 kit. Or indeed just leave the tip skids off to make life easier still. We won't grass you up, Mark. Honest.

Thanks matey! . Info also helpful, ta. I'll do some quick research and the like and make sure I can carry off an F.1 build. If not, with my modelling mojo still hit and miss, I'll go with the DR.1 as mentioned earlier.

Voss' F.1 had Dr.1 production straight edged tailplanes.

There were 3 F.1 = 101, 102 & 103
Only the first F.1 had the prototype curved leading edge tailplanes, but these were replaced with straight edged ones when it also changed from being V4 to 101

101 was kept at the factory for test flying
102 went to MvR
103 went to Voss

Thanks again Fred. I've seen varying numbers from two F.1's to four!!, as well as his final opponents being either six, seven or eight in number!!.

Plenty of conflicting info to keep you busy there then, Mark!

Here is my entry. Still have research to do but most can be built before that needs to be sorted. It does say the name of some vague pilot on the box front(!! ), but negotiation can be undertaken.

This will be fun to watch, I'm interested to see how the big scale kits go together.

Glad you picked Voss' aircraft to model
He was an amazing (and humble) pilot who deserved more recognition than he got.

You may find the streaked green finish challenging in 1/28. I'll be interested to see how you go with it. Also, do you have the decal for the face on the cowling?

La la la la la la!!  (fingers in ears singing!!). To be honest no, well yes but it's 72nd!!. I may have to look for one somewhere or try making my own!. And don't worry, I can do streaks!!! :ha:

Splash: I don't know about this kit as it's my first build of it but the same company's Camel went together very nicely as far as I remember!!.

In 1/72 Airfix issued the DR1 as Voss'
And Revell issued the 1/28 kit once with his markings
