Rob/Spaceowl's RDAF F-84G Thunderjet

Post by Spaceowl »

I've never done a second subject in a GB before, so I hope this won't be an anticlimax. This is Tamiya's 1/72 Thunderjet and it is nothing short of exquisite, especially coming off the back of a Toko P-63. I've only built the ejector seat and control panel so far, but if they're anything to go by, I might actually enjoy it. ;-)

Here's progress so far:

with the box and the HiTech decal sheet. What do you think, chaps - NMF or NATO camo? I'm undecided.

Early jets are always a treat, Spaceowl and the F-84 may be considered by some the apotheosis of the genre.

My vote is for NATO camo. Should set of those lovely Danish markings nicely.

The Great Auk

P.S. Camo can also cover a multitude of sins if you know what I mean...best of luck with entry #2!

Yes, I was veering towards that result myself, especially with the PRU blue undersurfaces. Camo it is.

Gotta be camo Rob. If you go with NMF you'll have to apply all those stencils!

Nice one, I've heard that this is an excellent kit. The T-Jet does look good in NMF but the finish can punish construction errors and just make life more difficult, mind you this is a Tamiya kit so I would expect it to go together well. No, no, I'll play safe. Go camo. Which is not to be confused with going commando. That is something else completely.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Fair point, Ian.

The office is together, along with the nose interior/ weird air splitter thing (to use the technical term :-D ). All went together flawlessly because it's Tamiya.

I was thinking about a thin ink wash to dull it down a bit, but discarded the idea. This was just one the RDAF kept very well indeed.

Next, the fuselage = watch this space.

Cockpit is fitted:

As is the splitter and the tail pipe. I decided not to fit the cannon pack in the nose and instead used the space for extra lead shot. This bird is going to sit up properly. :) There's nothing much to say about construction as this kit has fallen together so far - even needing minimal sanding along the joints. This is going to spoil me when I next do something by Toko or Roden.

That 'pit looks great! I especially like how you picked out those dials on the side console.

Details like that are bound to pay dividends.

Thank you chaps.

I'm trying hard to take my time with this one, but:

Image

This is a remarkably good model, perhaps the best I have built this year (or ever!) The only niggle I have with the kit is the small bit of filling along the wing root, but without SOME work it isn't really modelling. :-D

I've hit a bit of a bottleneck in the critical path at the moment - an intense PRU Blue lack - but advances in this direction have been made (cheers Ian). I will probably get to the undercoating stage this evening, so some slight progress tomorrow.

That's some fast progress and a real treat to watch all come together!

You have the patience of a saint with all that masking. I am in awe.

Actually I don't - I thought about it but thought 'life's too short; this is a hobby, not a test of character' and painted the canopy freehand. Spending my twenties painting 1/100th scale Napoleonic wargames figures didn't go completely amiss.

Just about ready for decals:

Image

I'm not sure about the bright baize green tip tanks, but that's the colour they're meant to be so not much I can do about it. Again, a beautiful kit and one that I can see myself building more of in projects to come.
Updates to follow.
