PM Supermarine Spitfire Vb floatplane ***FINISHED!***

Select the most rubbish kit in your stash, one that probably has no other chance of seeing a workbench, and build it however you wish - and have fun doing it along with others likewise occupied.
The GB runs from 27 Dec through 31 Jan and your host is DazDaMan.

PM Supermarine Spitfire Vb floatplane ***FINISHED!***

Post by gnomemeansgnome »

Yep, this one.....I will have to do the Vb as the four bladed airscrew was used on the Pegasus Buchon I built a while ago.

Good stuff.

I built the Italeri kit as the floatplane a while back. It was.... interesting!

Yes Daren, I understand that using the Italaeri Spit V instead of the PM one preserves one's sanity, but I will stare into the mouth of madness and tackle this kit in all its undeniable inaccuracy! :ha:

Hoo boy.....with the Macchi out of the way I finally got a chance to get a proper diabolical scrutinising squint at this kit. I now see what the deal is with the airframe portion. Yeesh. However, in the spirit of Krap Kits I will nevertheless build the whole thing and there will be no subsitutions. We shall see how that goes.

Looking at the box art I'm wondering if there was any trouble with water ingestion through that Vokes filter.

Anyone that can turn out a presentable result from a PM kit is worthy of respect in my eyes.

By the way, that Egyptian Macchi of yours was a real treat!

Cheers! As far as the Vokes filter was concerned I think the intake was raised further to reduce the risk of water ingestion. I have had middling success with making Putty Monster kits look presentable and will do my level best to uphold my average. Here`s where I am at with this pile of parts in soft and not very well detailed plastic....

Thanks. As I said although somewhat tempted to scrounge up a better Spitfire airframe, I am going to just be crazy and use the one in the kit. Only my 1960's Revell Spit II is anywhere near as bad as this one, hahahaha!

I think I built this a while back and as I remember the fuselage is short by about 3-4mm, enough to be obvious on plans. I ended up kit bashing it using an Italeri Spit. IIRC!!!.

Do the wings have wheel wells?

 Wouldn´t make much sense on a floatplane, huh?
But I wonder if they re-tooled ("sheeted-over" the wells) the land version of the kit for this purpose? (Or, maybe the floater was tooled first?)

From memory, the wings don't have wheel wells in them, a bit like the Frog Spitfire Mk.I kit.

Definitely no wheel wells. No 'gull wing' on the rear center section either. To be honest I had thought about doing one of these for this GB but I saw you were doing it, so I left it to a braver soul.
I have used parts from this kit and an Italeri MKV to produce a Seaplane spit and I have built the one with the resin extras that we produced at work. If I can find them I will get pics up for you.

All the best.

Well as I said I am building this one straight out of the box, no substitutions as I feel that violates the spirit of this build. And if I blanched at every kit I have that allegedly has issues I wouldn't build at all. Here's where I am at now. Pilot Officer Badger is looking sharp, just had to paint in his Mae West afterwards....
Image

I have cobbled together something that vaguely resembles an office and I am quite aware that it is probably not remotely accurate. More than anything I needed something, anything, that Mr. Badger could sit in and on. After that thick canopy goes on I doubt anything I did will be visible anyway.

This is coming along very nicely and I particularly like your detail work painting the pilot.
