The wheel house of the Landing Craft to show the fit, the clamps are loose and merely there for the parts to lean on. Needs tidying up and minor surgery.

Image

Clamping the walls of the superstrure on the monitor. The rear panel was bent to shape by placing it in boiling water and bending to the required profile. This process was done several times until I got it right fit. Glueing was done inch by inch to ensure a tidy and accurate join.

Image

How the turret will sit in relation to the superstructure. I did build a platform on which to mount the turret, but even though it was a mere 2mm deep, the turret stood far too high. This means I will have to cut a suitably sized hole fo the pivot. I've not shown it yet, but the pivot/turntable is taken from 1/72 Panzer 4.

Image

In the last picture you can also see the result of my mismeasuring the front plate. This has since been removed and a new plate installed.
One that fits this time.
I made the same mistake on the rear plate as well. A picture to follow.

Mismeasurements notwithstanding, these ship kits are looking pretty good so far.

Thanks for the encouragement.
The other mismeasurement. Oh well, easily fixed.

Image

The paddle housing fixed into place.
The funnel being tested for position. As should fairly obvious from the previous picture of the paddle steamer, the funnel has been taken from the Italeri Truck Accessories. Stripped of the chrome plating, and with dimples filled.

Image

The Wheel House. Having cleaned it of flash and carved out chunks so it actually fits together. I dont like it. So I think I will scratch build a new one that is more in keeping.

Image

With the ships pictured together, you can probably start to see where I am going with these.

Comments and critcism welcome.

Todays update is as follows.
The gap at the rear of the Monitor has been closed and filled, only to show another mistake by me. The gunwale at the back slightly lower than the side. Another one to correct.

Image

A new aperture has been cut into the deck to accept the turret. Needless to say the hole was smaller than all ny hole cutting tools. So the hole was made by drilling a circle of holes around the circumference, the connecting them up to make a large hole which was then filed to the round and correct size. The base of the turret is also visible showing the panzer 4 turret base, donated by Hasegawa.

Image

A test of the turret fit.

Image

The new wheel house on the paddle steamer, as yet unfinished but showing you where I am going with it.

Comments and critcism welcome.

I have started adding the gunwhales to the paddle steamer. Nothing clever, only a length of plastic card, 7mm high, glued around the deck. Next will be the fo'csle, rear deck as well as the upper deck.

Image

A splash guard (is that the right term?) has been added to the fore deck on the Monitor.

Image

The paddle steamers funnel and housing.

Image

The original life rafts and mounting rack, in grey. Obviously I think that I can do better. The unfinished new ones are in white.

Comments and critcism welcome.

Brilliant scratch building I’m picking up lots of good tips from this build.

The gunwhales have now been fitted to the stern of the paddle steamer.

Image

I started to fit gunwhalesto the upper deck. I had been wondering how I would get them around the corner, then I remembered the machine gun nests. I cut the nests down for a 90* turn, filed them thinner and then them glued in place. All fitted perfectly apart from this corner (below), it was remedied by immersing in boiling water and bending open until the right profile was achieved. It's a Lindberg kit so you can't expect perfection.

Image

The finished gunwhales on the upper deck. Needs a little tidying up. The gunwhales on the upper deck are a made from a thicker plastic to match thicker walls on the nest as I was a little reticent file the nest walls too thin.

Image

A short fence put up to protect the top of the rear stairs. This unfortunately hiigh lights the fact that are no hand rails on any of the steps. They will probably stay like this now as remedying it would be a pain. though if an idea occurs................

Image

The funnel housing in place. A smear of filler is needed to tidy the edges.

Image

As usual, comments and criticism welcome.
