Splash’s Fathers LST

Select the most rubbish kit in your stash, one that probably has no other chance of seeing a workbench, and build it however you wish - and have fun doing it along with others likewise occupied.

I came accross this and wondered if it would be a good way to reproduce the Higgins boats as you already have two to use as masters.

Thanks Daz.

The Blue Stuff arrived today and I have had a chance to play with it.

I must say I’m quite impressed, you just drop it in boiling water, wait three minutes and it comes out as soft as chewing gum and is easy to press around the object you want to copy, when it cools you can repeat to make the other half.

In the example below I have used car filler spread on both sides and the squeezed together, the surplus gets squeezed out and forms thin flash this is easily broken off when you open the two halves.

It is great stuff, isn't it. I've reused mine several times. I have never thought of using car filler instead of the modelling resins that seem very pricey. What's the pros and cons of it, Splash?

It’s fully reusable, just stick it back in hot water and away you go.

If I was casting something with a base like a tank turret, I would use resin as it’s simple to pore through the open base, but if it’s a small double sided with detail each end like these Higgins boats then car fill works fine you spread it into both halves of the mould then squeeze the two halves together and live with the surplus flash that gets squeezed out.

The car filler sets in 15 minutes and can be mixed in small quantities so little waste and quick results.

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I have something suitable that I need to mould.

Impressive work on the ship and a great job casting the Higgins boats.

The Blue Stuff looks like it'll be really useful, I'll have to get some.

It’s just cheap car filler the type you get the paste and a small tube of hardener in a tub.

This one didn’t turn out as good as the others but it shows the flash that you get when you separated the two halves.

Still, that is pretty cool stuff. I can think of loads of molds one could make out of just one package of it.

Wow, now that's really neat! And the Blue Stuff is relatively inexpensive as well. I must give it a try.

Progress has been slow as I have been spending too much time and fun playing with the blue stuff.

The LST has had a new coat of primer and I have roughly sprayed the black boot topping, I’m planning today to mask the boot topping and spray the hull red, I can’t confirm if she had a red hull or black so I’m going with red as it looks better.
