Not sure why I haven't painted this one Yeti

This is a "get your feet wet" GB for figures and busts for those who have been reluctant to try or want to expand their skills. Any era, any scale, any subject -- even supporting vehicles/equipment are allowed, say in a diorama/vignette.
This GB runs from 1st January to 11th February and your host is rob_van_riel.

Not sure why I haven't painted this one Yeti

Post by mjatx »

This figure has been sitting on my desk for a while. Seems like it should be a quick paint job, but I just haven't taken the time to sit down and do something with it.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with this Yeti Warrior from Reaper Miniatures, but maybe doing a groupbuild will inspire me. All white seems too boring, so I'm thinking of a light blue shading with white/brown/grey high/lowlights.

It's a fantasy miniature for use in D&D or other similar games and is scaled at about 1/56 or 28mm.

Now there's a fierce looking chap

There won't be a lot of entertainment found in the fur, but it looks like it's face and (to a lesser degree) hands should give you something to play with. Maybe you could have it chase some mountain troops off it's hill?

You could go the traditional white or add some mottling as found on other creatures leiving on a similar environment e.g. Snow leopard

Hopefully, this one will be done in tabletop mode for someone to use as part of a D&D campaign.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be too much to do with this one, but I'm going to try and liven it up a bit. We'll see how it turns out.

I'm thinking of making it look a little icy/frosty, with some muddy/grim in a few points. Kind of a ice-blue Wampa from Hoth.

Hopefully, he'll chase...AND CATCH...someone raiding party!

With a little bit of primer on him, the details are more visible.

I'm going to try a bluish base and try to build it up to white/grey from there. Not sure if it's going to work out, but we'll give it the old college try!

The primer also shows what appear to be seams between the fingers/claws ?

Explains a lot. It's a fairly vain thing really, and it's a bit miffed it just can't get a proper manicure :-D
The seam also seems to extend up the right arm, so possibly elsewhere as well.

Definitely, some seam lines to deal with. The plastic these are made of, as well as the fur detail, really make it a pain to clean these properly. The waxy type of plastic gets "feathery" and doesn't want to come off the figure. To clean these up, you have to scrap the seams, then get some tweezers and pull the little bits off, then repeat. Still I made some progress on the body and hands, although the hands still need a bit more. I'm not planning on dealing with the join between the right arm and the torso at the shoulder. That's how the figure came out of the package and trying to clean that up is more work than it would be worth. I'm hoping to hide it with some painting. We'll see.

I've had a few distractions at, and away from, the bench lately, so this Yeti isn't as far along as I'd like. I've started detailing the fur, and decided that I'll be painting hands, feet and some of the face in partial skin tones. I'd like to make this almost look like a man wearing a fur suit. Here's how it sits at the moment.

I'm starting to like how the fur looks and I'm hoping I can do some decent detailing around the face. In addition to work, life, and other kits distracting me from the Yeti, I've also been working on a couple other figures, which are closer to completion. Like the Yeti, they are 28mm miniatures for use in RPG games like D&D.

Your Yeti looks quite stylish in the blue!

You could have him photobombing a climber who is taking a selfie :-D

.....If it was a big enough scale, you could have taken a photo of the climber with the yeti behind him and then reduced that and glued it to the climbers camera as the viewer screen :ha:

.....dammit! I should have kept that idea for myself!

I've made some more...slow...progress on the Yeti. The base colors are painted, and I've added some washes to a few areas. Been a little distracted from the bench lately. Fortunately, I see a Blitzbau starts tomorrow, and nothing boosts the old mojo like a good blitz....or even a bad one sometimes.
