Rough Rider *** "finished" ***

This is a "get your feet wet" GB for figures and busts for those who have been reluctant to try or want to expand their skills. Any era, any scale, any subject -- even supporting vehicles/equipment are allowed, say in a diorama/vignette.
This GB runs from 1st January to 11th February and your host is rob_van_riel.

It was. For the future, however, I'm afraid that association might prove difficult to get rid of. I'm not sure whether to thank you for the joke or kick you in the unmentionables for that

Now, before this whole mob here goes wild on further off jokes, please remember that whole "family friendly" thing about the forum, and limit the giggles to what you would share with your wives and daughters present.

Base skin color is on, now starting clothing base.
I have been a bit distracted, so it's not going as smoothly as I planned.

OK, my time has been limited and it never seems the right time to take a photo, but here we are today.

Image

Basic skin is on, basic blouse is blue, neckerchief is red, suspenders are not quite as tan as I wanted, hat just has something on it. I may leave the suspenders alone (except for the clamps) and re-trim the blouse then the base skin so I can start on the face & hair. Then I'll change hat color.

I think I can avoid a DNF.

Here's state of play:

Image

On the left, note the glasses at the bottom - they may be a bit big, but I'm not going to fool with them, not even going to try to put lenses in. I have painted them a steel frame color, but am wondering if they should have earpieces. Fortunately I got two pair in case I screw one up.

Not shown, I gave the eyes a dab of blue, as usual, not well done, so I have some patching to do. Other than the eye and the glasses, I need to do something with the hair and face -- light & dark - or maybe just leave well enough alone.

Dipping the glasses frames into slightly diluted PVA could be an easy way to do the lenses. The only thing is to make sure they are allowed to dry somewhere draught-free as even a door closing nearby could pop the film when it's wet.
If you know anyone who works with a wire binding machine, their catch tray might have some 3 or 4mm clear discs if they have punched any clear acetate covers

Or Krystal Klear (which is of course the same stuff in a smaller bottle at a much bigger price  )

Calling this done, although it isn't really.

Here is the "Teddy the Owl" photo. I put lenses in the glasses but of course got a bit sloppy with the white glue -- but they do hide the so-so eye paint job. The problem is that the glasses (pince nez) are too big and they do not sit properly on the nose. I can fix that by carefully cutting out the bridge and positioning it - that will force the glasses up, right now I just have them positioned to fake it. The size issue means making my own frames. And of course new lenses, maybe with less glue smears.

The bust also needs varnish but I want to hold off until I'm sure I have the glasses done and I think it needs a bit more shadow in the creases.

And here's a few "glamor shots".

I've used two different ones in the completion thread.

Thank you, Rob, for hosting this. I didn't really accomplish what I started out to do, but most of that was external to the GB. I quite enjoyed, and enjoyed learning from, the various builds -- I'll never meet a high standard of figure modeling, but at least I'm not as embarrassed to show them as I was (or maybe should be). :)

That looks wonderful.
You'll have to get ahold of some solid brass rod to make the new specs; it's easier to bend over the tubing and easy to solder.
I really like the hat. Gonna get me a real one for my own outdoor bush whacking adventures.
