It's time to gird up my loins, bite the bullet and avoid clichés like the plague and venture into an area that I've so far managed to avoid.......scratching a drum kit!

Normally the drums are out of the way at the back where tradesmen belong, but on Top of the pops the drums were often put at the front of the stage. Thankfully Ian Paice used a fairly basic 5 piece kit ( although for the studio recording of the song Fireball he used two bass drums ) Gawd help me if I was attempting the likes of Neal Pearts kit!

I'm using glittery blue card of approx. 200g for the drum case and similar weight plastic card for the skins. Detailing will be done with silver(ish) duct tape and plastic rod. I started with the bass drum and immediately it became obvious that something solid would be needed inside to keep the integrity of the round shape as all the fiddly bits are added. For the bass drum the lid from a Humbrol acrylics pot, fringed with a layer of Blu tack did nicely, but I need to find other things for the snare, toms and side drums. Instead of doing a load of individual stage ( unintentional pun) photos of the drums construction, I'll try to photograph all the steps together, kinda like the Evolution drawing......and yes, I do realise that having 'Evolution' and 'Drums' in the same sentence is an oxymoron!

What about your local hardware store? Lots of different sized plastic conduit and stuff.

The two drums you have done so far look fantastic!

Excellent work as always! I really enjoy your conversions. I'm lucky to be able to fit the figures together in the way the manufacturer intended them to be, but you are able to make some really incredible scenes.

Scratching a drum kit has been a steep learning curve and I only just got the hang of doing drums by the last one, the snare.
The bass drum should have had the mounts for the toms and the legs wired through early on, I'll remember that for the next time I do a drum kit which will probably be....like....NEVER!





......unless, of course, I do this guy....one of the few drum solos I've actually enjoyed being at
