Or do a combo - those who want or can contribute a boxart can do so, those who can't or don't want to, don't have to.

As per the previous box art displays, I'd be happy to build the background "display" if anyone wants to just builds the model itself and then send it to me, so that nobody gets put off joining in from fear of not having the "arty" skill they perceive are needed.

Though a handful of us are willing to embrace the Box Art concept I think Mav expresses the sentiment of many of CBK members. Though the first display was a great success, ~18 participants the second one wasn't with only ~8. Without a very strong and active membership I don't think we can pull a full Box Art display off again. This is not to say individual's contributions to the theme can't be done in a Box Art style.

Re: The 100 years theme or (rather the 75th theme  )

1. I've come to realise not many SIGs or Branches do themes, when the WWI Centenary came around there was really only the central IPMS display, and then individual models on tables.
2. Let the kits decide what is available not the other way around, if there is no CBK Swift then no Swift.

I'm not keen on the box art idea,It looks great when we have a full house but as James says we will struggle and I've not got an artistic bone in me. I'm more inclined towards an open table.I found it a real struggle to get motivated this year and tended to finish off more prestarted kits than new ones. Luckily I had a reasonable amount of CBK's already done.
Tries hard, easily distracted..

The problem with an RAF theme is that it goes aircraft-centric to almost the exclusion of anything else -- not just availability of CBKs, but also interests of modelers and the possible need to spend a good deal of time to scratch/convert something. We could make things easier by doing the RAF theme "open table" and not further design it (i.e., not try to represent each decade or whatever) -- but understand, as James pointed out, the period selected and the available CBKs determine the display.

If we do it "open", it would be good to put some effort into what, other than airplanes, might be available/suitable for those who might want to head in that direction. For example, I started a conversion of the Airfix 1911 Rolls into an RNAS armored car, that can easily be finished as something from the RAF Regiment.

We did a "Box Art Display", very successfully, but I think one is enough, lets not wear it, or ourselves, out. "Box Art" is now associated with the CBK SIG and we are free to include any box art models, just as we might a diorama/vignette, as we wish.

I think the response to the open table idea is a desire to not force ourselves to have fun, it doesn't always work.
But see also my comment in Greg's thread about still having to manage an open table.

Listening in but with little to contribute to the debate, beyond saying that I too like the idea of honouring the RAF's anniversary via CBKs.

Got my Diamond Anniv Yearbook; not looked in detail, but the big cutaway of the Vickers Virginia made it all worthwhile.

I too like the idea of an RAF100 display. The only problem I have with it is how many other sigs and branches will be doing the same. I do think the idea of having an RAF100 and open table half and half display is the way to go though. Not everyone makes aircraft, not everyone is into RAF subjects. For example a nautically inclined modeller has their choices narrowed to probably only one subject, the Airfix rescue launch. Great kit as it is it limits the choice somewhat to two versions. Just my 2pw. I wil build for what ever is decided though.

All the best.

Greg.

I do not disagree with you, Greg, in fact I'm not sure I'm in favor of forcing ourselves into another theme, particularly one so limited in modeling scope. I only posted to acknowledge receipt of the yearbook; it'll be useful regardless.

However, see my comments in your other thread about the need to "curate" an open table to be sure all have the opportunity to participate.

I think doing a split table, half-and-half, neither fish nor fowl may not be a good option, but if we considered it "open" but all aircraft had to be RAF in the period 1918-2018-25(1993) that might be possible. Same if we used the 1918-1978 period.

Something I omitted to mention in my earlier post was an overheard conversation at Telford between an IPMS official and some other guys that suggested the IPMS may be staging a special display on the RAF 100 theme in a similar fashion to the one for the Great War they did 3 years ago. Probably best to keep an eye out on the IPMS website for any development on this, but if it goes ahead it will be more of the same for us to compete with if we chose the same theme, even as a split table.

I think we are really all about CBK first and then a theme to display them in, not about a theme to be done with CBK.
It's a subtle difference, but places CBK 1st and more like the curated open table..

I couldn't agree more John. So what is the general consensus? To me it's starting to look like a planned open table in which if anyone wants to pay homage to thd RAF 100th aanniversary then that's fine. If that is what gets agreed upon then I will do at least one RAF CBK build amongst my builds.

All the best.

Greg

Personally, I think that whatever you do decide on doing, in the main part, the models on the table ought to be "fresh" to CBK table for 2018; and not "another chance to see" models that have graced the tables before umpteen times.

This is especially more prevalent, when you are alongside the same other groups etc, and are in pretty much the same location in the halls each year .... the public do remember - well do - what I see on some SIG and club tables from year to year

As for the RAF - if that is what some and the majority want, I can find something to do, but my options are much less than many of you as I am largely not an aircraft builder - but I could find something to build (it might have to be a vehicle or the control tower.) and contribute that has not graced your SIG before.

I did make and post list of topics that you could use as the basis for displays a good while ago; a link to it is here:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=14364

However to save you all going there, I have brought it over to here

1. The London concept carried forward from last (and previous) years..

2. Films - ie you build a model or dio etc to depict something in a film

3. two-seaters - anything that had or has two seats

4. Silver - anything that has or is predominantly silver or any other colour we select - red and/or yellow are other good ones for this idea

5. Rescue and Recovery - planes, vehicles, helicopters - military or cilivian used for rescue and emergency

6. Animals - not just the dinosaurs but anything that bears the name of an animal - panther, tiger tanks etc etc

7. First and Last - the first and/or last ones of anything that were made or put into production

8. F F F the three F's (things that came First, travelled the Furthest or were Fastest in some capacity)

9. Rivals - eg Hood/Bismarck; and or any pair of planes, tanks etc from opposing and rival sides

I will leave my ideas there.....
and many of those could allow and would provide a largely "open" table but with a tad of a theme
