Scale Modelworld 2018 Theme

Rather than clog up the thread welcoming Greg on board as SIG leader with theme (if any) discussion, let's have a dedicated thread.

My proposal: it's going to be hard to avoid the 100th Anniversary of the RAF next year, and anyway, I think that's a milestone worth marking.

So my suggestion is The RAF 1918-1978, in Classic British Kits. Any aircraft, vehicle or vessel operated by the RAF in a CBK available in or before 1978.

Why? I hear you asking...

Given the age, stage and interests of this merry band, I suspect a good many of us will have had this:
Image

It's got many interesting articles, including the exciting "new" Tornado described and flown, a photo review of the RAF in 1978 (brown camo'd Hercules with a white roof, Bloodhound missiles, ASR Wessex, among the more familiar fare) and a Chronology of the RAF 1918-78 with much inspiration and nice colour profiles. That could be a jumping off point,

So, what else? 1978 is getting towards the end of the glory days of CBKs, but there's plenty of good kits to go at. For me, it was also when I really started trying to do more than just throw a kit together, and make a good model, so we can also follow Greg's "scrubs up nicely theme". Plenty of opportunity for the smaller manufacturers and non-"big-three" (The Inpact Bulldog, Gladiator, Fury and Flycatcher are ALL fair game, for example).

Plus I'm sure between us we have the nucleus of a solid display, but plenty of scope for new builds as well.

Anyway, that's my proposal... have at it!

best,
M.

Would seem a logical step after doing the 500ish years of the Royal Navy. I know we have avoided anniversaries in the past but this gives us a 100 years of aviation to play with rather than a specific period in time. Those of an AFV persuasion could always look at support vehicles and then there are the SAS 1/32 figures.

..need to check if I have that year book.

Got one on order, paperback and only about $9 including postage.

Actually my holiday reading is Ian Philpott's 3-volume "encyclopedia" which will get me as far as 1939.

I’m more than happy with this idea - only problem I have 1978 is the one year book I don’t have! Great idea though.

hi i had thought to mark the RAF 100th aniversary initially but realized it would be hard to represent the more modern aircraft with out stretching the qualifying limit of the CBK up to about 1990 to include harriers /tornado's etc but if we cutoff at 1978 we also lose vulcanB2 lightning F3 hunter FGA9 RAF Launch maybe others (not sure what would be omitted in the matchbox range),it seems like a good chunk of the later RAF aircraft would be missing and think this would be noted by anyone looking at the display, so i feel if the RAF theme is chosen should we not give dispensation for this year only to the harrier and tornado so we could more fully represent the more modern periods of the RAF

Edit: i think i may have misunderstood what Matt is referring to with regard to 1978 but i think the point about trying to include harriers and tornado's is still worth thinking about

I like it!

I have the mag, somewhere, so I need to dig it out this weekend. As I recall, there are LOTS of nice colour profiles to accompany the articles - perhaps we could try to make the models in the schemes represented by those profiles. I'm sure decals would be available for most every one of them.

As for the Tornado, I think I'm right in saying that the original Airfix MRCA/Tornado kit had pre-production a/c markings that could be used/modified.

The original Harrier GR.1 kit can also be modified to represent a bottle-nose Harrier, provided those feature in the mag. Airfix Magazine featured just such a conversion back in the day.

I'm up for this idea!
I have the Airfix P.1127 which I could build for this possibly pretty quick!
I could probably find other CBK Harriers too.

I have reservations about this being the theme for the entire table because it is so aircraftcentric (to make up a word) - and before the obvious comments about the RAF also having vehicles or figures that could be converted etc; true, but they didn't have dinosaurs or sailing ships or many other CBK type kit themes which I was looking forward to building for a theme free year next year as was also being touted at Telford.

Just my opinion here - you all know I enjoy building aircraft as much as the next modeller so if the RAF Anniversary gets the nod then I'll certainly be joining in that.

Cheers
Al.

a possible solution to consider is an open table with a centre feature for the RAF100 theme (possibly sat on a large roundel) the percentage given over to the RAF100 display section could be worked out when we have an idea what people would like/intend to build in this coming year

I'll say now that won't be doing any specific display building for next year's CBK display as I want to take at least a year off from building for Telford. That said, if I happen to have something already built or that I build during the year that fits then I would put it forward for consideration. Although I won't be actively participating, given the overall popularity of aviation modelling I would say that the RAF 100 years theme (or indeed the 100 years since the end of WWI) is probably going to be presented by just about any IPMS Branch or SIG that can tie itself to the theme no matter how tenuous the link! Does CBK SIG want to be one of the masses or do something different? just a thought, which you are perfectly at liberty to ignore of course

Given that this SIG generally likes to be located alongside the same group of fellow SIGs year on year, and are regularly in a similar position in the hall each year.... it would seem to me, quite important to try and ensure that a display is fresh and different, and as wide range of different and fresh on show models are displayed

I have always admired the box-art displays, and I know that a lot of fellow clubs and SIGs remember this SIG for those displays. I would very willingly participate in a box art theme for 2018. Given that you are unique with the box-art .... and if you want to encompass the RAF ........

Box arts of RAF subjects?

Once a theme or a final decision is made, if I have something already made which I have not brought up to Telford before, I would consider offering it up; or if I have enough time once the decision is made, and can build something new to offer, from kits in the stash, I will assist and join in.

I have to admit that I said much ghe same as Shaun has sair re- everyone jump on the RAF100 theme. But if that is the theme you all choose then I am happy to go along with it. I have been monitoring the discussion and not adding input thus far so as not to influenceit though. I slso sgree that we would hsve difgiculty with the later RAF types though but as stated the MRCA would cever the Tornado. The Pegasus EFA the Eurofighter Typhoon. We would be stuck with the Nimrod unless someone gets brave enough to chop and change an Airfix Comet. Many ghanks for the offers of builds and assistance.

All the best.

Greg

Well, I'm always up for a Box Art display, so if the mood of the party was RAF Box Arts I'd certainly contribute. The only issue (as we've found before) is that lot of people who'd build a model for a display are put off by the perceived difficulty of Box Arts. Them's as have done it already will just have to be ready to support and encourage them!

I'm sure we can quickly throw together an inspirational gallery...

best,
M.

I probably wouldn't be able not pull of a box art display to be honest as I haven't got anywhere near the skill required for all the scratch building needed.
