It's only just struck me that I can't see a build thread here for G for George, surely one of the most iconic Airfix box art pieces. I have an old Airfix Lanc. but it isn't the G for George boxing,however, I can have a go at throwing it together if no one else has started this icon.
What I need to know is what was the rest of the marking, other than the "G", and I'll see if I can reproduce it from other decals.

OK, so having spent more than 30 seconds thinking about it this time, I went to the horses mouth so to speak...

...so it appears to be AR-G. I also have a Hase and a Revell Lanc in the stash so I'll see if I can construct a couple of AR-Gs from them - or may just hand paint them on! I'm not too concerned with serials/reg. number as this really will be a quick build.

It appears I have started the Airfix build previously and have managed to break off all four wheel supports/axle hubs from the wheel struts so will have to re-construct them from brass tubing of different cross sections. Not gonna be such a quick build after all from the look of it.

Here we go then - very little detail done on the inside apart from applying the instrument panel and side-wall panel decals. The pilots control column got knocked off and went down the back of the workbench (fixed) so that is gone forever - I shall see if there is time to make a replacement later.

I've sprayed Vallejo Dark Earth and Xtracrylix RAF Dark Green as the original box art has a dusk/sunset look (yellow skies) to it so I wanted the plane to look "dark" as well.



My camera doesn't do macro but you may be able to get the gist of the brass tube suspension I had to build to replace the plastic that got broken off and lost.





A look at that nice i/p decal...



And a dry fit of the wings to the body.



Next step to fill any bodywork cracks then apply the black paint, add detail, decals and then try to model a convincing burning engine and smoke and flames streaming backwards... and a baseboard and backdrop of course.

The reds are a bit bright though!

The Lancaster is looking sharp.

Quick, no nonsense building Al, good stuff. Are you going to shred the port aileron as in the art work or should I keep quiet and just let you get on with it?

Undersides and prop not painted yet, and prop bluetacked in place, but I think you can get an idea of what's going on...

Good work there Al , i wish my slow builds looked as good as your blitz there.

Impressive display on controlled destruction. I love that you've even matched the flaying bits of control surfaces.

Today's progress - very much a work in progress still but basically you have a brass rod attached to the nacelle onto which have been stuck Quality Street sweet wrappers then cotton wool sprinkled and daubed with black chalk pastel.

The point where the brass enters the nacelle has still to be worked on to hide it, but basically all of this was really an experiment to see if I could reproduce the box art with this method or if it would look totally pants, so please give me your honest opinions - I'm a big fella, I can take it!









I still need some wheels for the "caravan" - can anyone suggest (or even donate!) a possible chassis. I may try the Airfix Emergency Set Ambulance if I can find it in the stash but I suspect the wheel base may be too long.

Still a fair bit to do on the aircraft (crew to be fitted, glazing to be fitted, rear wheel missing etc. etc.), but here are the progress pictures:









Note that the a/c is tilted back here as I drilled the hole in the board a tad too big for the acrylic rod. This has since been fixed by wrapping a narrow sleeve of Tamiya tape around the base of the rod to give a much tighter (and more vertical) fit in the baseboard.
