Airfix SH-3D '66'

Post by MDT »

I couldn't resist picking an attempt at creating the box art for the good old Airfix SH-3D '66'.

I bought this from good old fleabay for a reasonable price - its a 1979 issue that was still sealed.
The decals are slightly yellow but a bit of time in the window/sun should sort them...

For the Apollo command module I will use 'Columbia' from this set for a bit of scale depth -

This set actually belongs to my nine year old daughter who has kindly allowed me to use her command module, which she had already started building and painting.

In the process she is now determined to enter the under 11 SMW 2011 competition with the Lunar Module also from this set for a moon based diorama - This is now turning into a family mission!

I'm sorry for not updating for a while - had some fairly major distractions recently but I got started experimenting for creating a good sea base around a month ago. I actually took photos at all the stages but I then manged to accidentally delete them...
Here is what I have so far for a the sea and Apollo capsule. I've used plaster of Paris as a base -

A carefully clipped together SH-3 looks to fit nicely on a Matchbox stand...the wooden frame that was once a High School Musical picture was kindly donated by my daughter.

I've started detailing some internal structure on the SH-3 as per the box art, the main door will be partially open -

For some extra internal seating I've used parts from and old UH-1 -

That's going to look cool. I can't wait to see more.

What are you using for the water?

Cheers! As for water I'm looking to experiment with a good mix of paints, PVA and probably Klear. I can't really afford enough of the rather impressive 'Magic water' type products even if its the best option.

Great to know things are moving along Matt. Don't worry about not using any of that fancy water effect stuff as I certainly won't be. I want real waves for my J2F6 diorama and I know I can achieve them with polyfiller painted green/blue and dry brushed with white.

Sorry for no regular updates but I've had massive issues with PCs etc

This is what I'll bringing to Telford tomorrow morning -

I've not quite captured all the details but it has been fun - The old Airfix Sea King brushes up quite nicely!

Matt had done a marvellous job with this the flare smoke looked really good and is just srpayed cotton wool on a wire armature. Simple but very convincing.
