Thankyou Matt - which actually makes her longer than the 1/700 Kirov class battlecruiser I'm doing for the Cold War SIG  Not a problem though as she'll still fit where I thought.

I was thinking that maybe one of the Beaus could be 'peeling off' ready for an attack run - a bit more animation, I feel.

I'll be buying a set of three 1/300 scale 3D printed Beaus, so those can be positioned near the destroyer. Some of the 1/144s can be placed between the 72s and 300s, with 48s and Al's 32 in the foreground?

And now for you John - and I apologise for the delay in answering your post, I had seen it when you posted but got distracted before replying and subsequently forgot  :

1. Norwegian waters camo is spot on for the location and scenario so that's great.

2. Just under 6" will fit nicely in the area I have planned in my head, the Destroyer will be about 8 to 9" long I think but I'll need Matt to confirm this.

3. The 'water' on the base will be provided by our standard 'Sea grey' display cloths so on small bases please John. Perhaps depicting pack ice as I have described above - although the ships would be sitting in a broken up area.

4. The description of the attack states that the Z32 was positioned adjacent to the shoreline with the escort vessels disposed fore and aft of her. The attack waves were forced to attack on a single bearing and departed on a similarly singular course ie a nice straight line over the anchorage so I would expect the gunners to be firing along that line in whichever way made them most accurate.

5. Muzzle flashes are optional although I am going to ask Matt if he can replicate the flak bursts he made for the box-art dioramas. They would certainly add even more animation to the scene.

6. Build location is entirely your choice John. In here is where I expect most action to occur but I will be posting my builds on my Workbench to in order to act as free advertising - not everyone will look down here in the SIG sections.
Thanks, Tom - I just wanted to stick my hand up as the discussion seems to be heading toward counting Beaufighter serials on the head of a pin

#1 - OK
#2 - OK
#5 - OK

#3. To hide below the waterline, I only need 4-5mm, so I'll go with that - OK? I am unsure artistically how to hide my clear water in pack ice, so suggestions are welcome. Also, do you have any recommendation on the size of my small base? I was thinking 5-10mm around the hull maybe slightly oval, tapered on each end ? I assume these ships were stationary, so I don't need a small wake or bow wave? I hope my 'sea gray' matches yours close enough.

#4 - I'm still a bit adrift on this one, from the sketches above, the aircraft appear fine off the port bow, but the exit terrain appears to favor a slight right turn on exiting. As I mentioned, I can do guns at the end, but I'd appreciate "the definitive" sketch as soon as we can get to it.
-- Also, I see from one sketch there are 3 flak ships, and the documents mention tugs or trawlers. If I can find a 3rd, not a flak-lighter, do you want it, or might someone else want to do it ?

#6 - I'll probably start 2 threads up in the ships forum (for that visibility) and link them from here. - but I may reverse that. The BIG question is if you want a 2016 build forum set-up, and where (under Chat or Displays/Events) or just let folks go as they wish? If we set up a forum, it might be good to move this thread into it (with a trail back to here) - let me know.

Isn't it best to keep what your doing under wraps as long as possible from the great masses or is that not an option with this sig and how it's setup

No, we (CBK,CC) sometimes keep the theme selection under wraps, not as top secret but to avoid exposing what went into arriving at the final selection (kinda like making sausage). After that we want the models building, etc, to draw interest and possible members. There's no grand prize for best kept secret and little chance a theme would be stolen.

We usually keep the theme discussion restricted to SIG members since they're the ones whose display it is, and ultimately, they're the ones who have to build it. Of course, anyone can join the SIGs and participate...

Once it's chosen, though, I think the more visibility of build threads the better -- I'll certainly happily take advice from anyone who knows more about building ships than me.... which is probably a fair fraction of "anyone"...

M.

Today, I reduced the card model to scale, so both kits are ready to start.
I also received another set of resin/pe guns and am awaiting a 3rd type. Still looking for a better 88 up front.

Tom, how do you want to handle builds ? Do you want a 2016 build forum set-up, and where (under Chat or Displays/Events) or just let folks go as they wish? If we set up a forum, it might be good to move this thread into it (with a trail back to here) - let me know.

I'm happy for people to post their builds either in this thread or in the regular Chat forum (or on their workbenches) John. Really the more visable the builds are the better with regards raising SIG profile.

Fantastic idea!
I don't have any kits on the "wanted" list though so other than the Sunderland that I've just finished I have nothing to offer Tom.
Just for kicks here is my newly restored Sunderland dedicated to my late Grandpa:
She was given to me like this:

And after giving her a soak, rub down, reattaching a lot of loose bits, adding new decals and painting and attaching the landing gear legs and rear trailor she now looks like this:

Just a heads up for everyone. Matt has informed me that a delivery of 1/144 Mustang III's have safely arrived on British shores. He has two sets available for anyone who wishes to build them for the display so please feel free to pipe up and claim a build or two.

Furthermore there are plans afoot to commission a custom decal sheet to cover the missing decals for this project. The obvious candidates are the 1/144 scale markings as there aren't too many generic sheets in circulation but they will not fill a whole A5 sheet - so other suggestions are welcome as to how we can maximise the sheet and get the best value for money.

I just ordered a pair of 3D printed 1/300 Beaufighters to hang in the background.

I am still waiting for the Aviaeology 1/72 Dallachy Wing decal sheet - they have had unexpected delays; it was supposed to be out after Christmas.....

I haven't forgotten this Tom and have an Airfix New Tool 190A-8 lined up. All I need to source are the appropriate JG5 decals.
